I have been getting a monster on my trail cams everyday at the same spot. He comes in early in the morning and late in the evening. What time do you guys go in opening day. I am afraid that I may jump him so what do you guys think.

RE: opening day hunt times

I like to be on stand at least an hour before daylight and no later than 4 in the afternoon.

RE: opening day hunt times

First of all make sure the wind is right to hunt that spot before you go in. If the wind is wrong just leave him be and stay out of the area all together. I know from trial and error that if he even get one whiff of your sent you will not see him at all. As for time to go in i would get there at least hour and a half before you think he will arrive be it morning or evening. Make sure to setup on the down wind side of where you expect him to come in from. If it is hill or mountians area watch the up and down draft of the wind for morning and evenings. If you do not get him on the first morning or evening you hunt stay out of the area for 5-6 day then hunt it again, you do not want to over hunt the area and risk him catching wind or sight of you going or coming from your stand. Make sure you have planed out you entrance and exit route for both morning and evening hunts so yo do not spooke any deer coming or going from your stand. Hope this help you out i have been hunting deer for the past 33 years and this is what i would do if i was in you shoes. Good luck and if you get him post some pictures.

RE: opening day hunt times

I appreciate all your help, I had his pics last year, but never once saw him. I havent been hunting long cause I was always the one sent in to rid our property of hunters, so I thought I would try it out and I fell in love. If I can figure it out I will post some pics of him.

RE: opening day hunt times

Take into consideration the full moon the week of the 8th. He may be moving later in the eve if the moon permits, wich would mean to me a late return from feeding in the AM. Keep an eye on the temp. If he is feeding at 79 or whatever it was, watch for temps to fall and he may switch his schedule. Early season deer are strange sometimes, and KY is on the money watch the damn wind! I have gone after specific bucks on opener, had them walk up to the tree i slithered up at at 4 am and turn and snort. I saw that deer one time the rest of the year, so be careful. NICE deer good luck man. Hope to see him with his tongue out in a few weeks!

RE: opening day hunt times

Thanks for the help, I still have pics of him coming and going in the morning and evening. Im nervous as can be, cause I dont want to jump him and my neighbors arent in the woods yet either. I know they may push him overf a bit and there is no telling where he will pop up next. Also where he is coming in at is covered up with deer. Most of the time when he shows up there are already between 12 and 15 deer feedin in this area so pulling off a shot is going to be difficult, but thats what make bow hunting exciting. Another thing do you guys go to your area to hunt to determine the wind direction or do you check online. Sorry for the dumb question, but if I drive over to check, Il need to do so around 3:30 AM if I go in the morning. He comes everyday in the morning, but in the evening its about 4 days a week.

Re: opening day hunt times

if it were me i would try and get in as early as possible and the wind is gonna be the only way u will kill this deer ....determine where the bedding area is and approach on the down wind side so they dont smell u walking in even if u have to go a few hundred yards out of the way i always watch what the wind is on the tv or internet but u know how those things lie i would go there that morn and check the wind dont rely on tv or computer..... remember hunting ridges and hollers the wind can swirl really bad at times i would not wear my hunting clothes or boots in my vehicle i would change when i got to where i park and spray down really good and take ur time walking in so u dont make to much noise and dont work up a sweat !!!! dont over hunt it!!!!! hunt it and let it rest cause like they said u blow him out ur chances of seeing him again will be rare .......i would try and stand up as much as possible in my stand cause they can sneak in on u and u never know it til its to late ..........good luck and be safe

RE: opening day hunt times

Alright all is in order as far as I can tell. My main concern is my neighbor, big boy will be there in the am for sure, unless he smells me, he has been there 82 out of the las 85 days, pretty good odds. He has to cross my neighbor to get to me, but in the am he is already in the area so I have to bust him before my neighbor sees gets a shot. He will pass him going back to bed, but I am so afraid that I will bump going in. Should I take a chance and hunt the morning still or would you guys pass and hunt the evening. He is on a schedule in the morning %100, so if I do my part we will have a breakfast date for sure, but I have had an occasional pick of him around 4:30 AM, but he returns to the area around 6:45 and stay till around 7:30. Would you guys go in around 3:30 AM or do you think my scent would stink up the area? I also thought about getting in the tree around 6:00 PM on friday and waiting for him till Saturday morning( I know sounds stupid, but I want him bad)

Re: opening day hunt times

Man That would NOT be a very good idea to stay the night in a tree. You might want to check out the statistics of hunters being paralized for life from falling out of a tree {most fall asleep}. I would think the longer you are in the area the longer your scent has to linger around HIS area. Just relax man, you dont want to over think the situation. Brother no damn deer is worth the mobility of 90% of your body. You said between 4-7:30 am he is there. you cant shoot till 7, so go in at 5:30-6 let it chill out, and stay alert. Your nieghbor? really man? Only you know if you are a good shot, and if you are capable of harvesting this animal. Your niehbor may choke....I have...Has'nt everyone...... ;)

Re: opening day hunt times

Jenfish I uess your assuming that this feller doesnt wear a safety harness? I bet he does. I know some folks that have done the all night thing and it does work. I would risk bumping him and go in at regular times. Kill your scent, hunt hard. Good luck!!!

Re: opening day hunt times

Sorry Spur, I was wrong. Go in friday morning sit all day, and night, piss and crap everywhere, and dip/smoke, cough/fart. And when he comes in at 4:30 am stick him in the dark, and hope for a good shot/blood trail its okay if its a spike....its a deer. Well, Spur thinks it will work. emoThumbsup Spur im guessing you were spelling "guess" remember some people make mistakes in spelling and grammer.Last time I checked we all live in the south buddy and no one is perfect. emoSorry

Re: opening day hunt times

Hey guys thanks for the help, I will have my harness on, but I am going to go in early just not all night. I will check my cameras in the morning and see when they are in the area thick. We have a ton of deer here, so I have a lot of eyes to get past. Last week around 8:30 am I had 16 deer on my plot at one time and its not a big plot. I am so pumped about friday, just worried about spooking him and not getting a second chance. I truly appreciate all the help. Hey Spur if I dont get a shot at him, I was fortunate enough to draw the TNT hunt, so we got our chances there too dont we emoToast
