For anyone that runs only Optimax oil in their Merc- if you don't already know Nichols has the 2 1/2 gal jug for 56 bucks.
I'm probably stupid but, I've been paying $40 for a gallon.

A lot of people have told me I don't need to run it but, it's all I ever ran since the motor was new and I'm not changing for a few bucks!

I would have to vote for Penzoil myself. I used to run Klotz until my motor went down. When I looked at the cylinders there was no appreciable difference in the amount of carbon or wear patterns. As long as it is a TC-3 oil, it will be good.

If your Optimax is still under warranty, you are much safer using Optimax Oil or Merc. Premium Plus. Thats what the owner's manual calls for and using either could save you a lot of hassle if you ever have warranty work done.
Just My 2 cents.

I run Premium Plus in my ProXS.. Dalton Marine has it by the bulk at $21/gallon. I believe Fish n Fun has it by the bulk too, but I don't know the prices there.

If anyone is interested Academy has the Pennzoil Premium Plus for 12.99 a gallon. That's all I use, and the cheapest I have seen it.

I work in the oil business. If a manufacturer requires you use their brand of oil they have to provide it for free. Thats a leagal fact backed by the robertson-pittman act I believe. I use the P+ in my opti and havent had an oil related issue.

I don't know about marine engine warranties, but after doing warranty repairs for years on autos, no one was ever denied repairs for the brand oil they used in their engines. The oil simply had to meet the API requirements for make/model/year.

Failure to change their oil near the scheduled mileaqe intervals was another story. But even at that, it wasn't worth the costs of attorney's to go to court. Manufacturer's don't like courtrooms, it always seem to look like the big guy picking on the little guy and most judges have owned at least one vehicle that gave poor service from the start.

Thanks for the input! Did you start with Opti and change or always use P-Plus?

I started with Opti and went to P+. The only difference is in ur wallet. I know several people who run the new Merc. XS motors and are using the walmart brand:supertech. As long as its TCW-3 certified it will do fine. I use the P+ because I want a quality oil ran through my motor, but there is no difference in performance.
