Hey guys and gals...

Anyone one here can help me rebuildiing my carbs.. need really good cleaning .. I did it once sorta got me thru the season, but never got completely cleaned. Was affraid I couldnt get them back in sync. It is a 70hp 1978 3cyl evinrude. I can take em off and clean, just affraid of the sync part .. might get outa wack and not run .. not that its runnin to hot now .. CFF3 ran abou 3-5 mph back from Coon Creek, was truckin along fine on the way down, it sputtered and lost power .. I played with it and it picked the speed back up .. and was fine .. till went to start engine again.. Would rev up good and sounded good till put in gear and it just never got and speed up .. Same thing happened last yr .. after bought the boat .. Im pretty sure thats all it is .. I could be wrong though ?! Any help appreciated.

Sounds like to me your floats are sunk. When the floats are sunk it floods the motor when giving it gas. Also could be a stator, and is losing voltage when the flywheel speeds up.How many carbs does it have?

It has 3 carbs, I took them off last year (keeping the linkages together) and cleaned out some of the gunk, guess didnt get all , and it has built up again.

In Neutral it dies, Im pretty sure its only running on 2 of the 3 carbs, and Im pretty sure it is just jet clogged up. I can dis-assemble and re-assemble its the link and sync part that worries me. I wonder what a shop would charge me to do that part and check compression for me ? or someone out there that knows outboards inside and out.

Chattanooga Marine, yea if you can catch him there .. I like the guy we have talked alot bout fishing and such.. but he has wierd store hours. But I never thought about him .. maybe he and I can work out something .. Id love to learn how to do engine repair .. guess its like computers just jump in there and do it. Chattanooga state has a marine mechanic school .. I fired off a email to them to see if they fix just anyones motor!? and too see what the course costs.. Id love to get out of computers all together and do something more fishing related .. and hands on.

If that was you Jason .. PM me on what you'd charge me to link and sync carbs after I overhaul em .. and cost to give it a good once over.. compression check etc. Money is a object .. I is the po folk here .. obviously by the old beat up boat I have

If you rebuild them, just remember where your mixture screw was set. I would tighten one at a time and count how many turns. Usually about 1 1/2 turns will do it, and it is better to be a little rich than lean on the mixture. I also take closeup pictures of the linkages and draw them out. Also take notes as to how it came apart.

I'm sure it will work out for you.emoThumbsup

Glen Gamble used to be with Marine Specialty, has worked on OMC since back in the 60's, anyway, his place is on BonnyOaks where hwy 58 crosses 153. Go down the hill past Gov's across the creek where Crafts old place is. It "The Outboard Doc" and Glen is a good guy. 622-5450

Gary's Marine on Hwy 50 right at the entrance to Tims Ford just outside of town .. and I do believe his name was Gary - Big Guy Dark hair

Marine Specialtyis on Dayton Blvd, in Red Bank bout 2 miles from my house, unless there is a another shop same name.. I think the guy used to be over there.. I have seen boats there (but not in awhile) .. dont think its the same one over here.

I just finished rebuilding the carbs.. they been sitting in gal of carb cleaner for several days, shaking can on paint mix on low speed every 4 hr for 10min, then blew em out with compressed air .. clean as a whistle, new floats too .. by god it aint gonna give me fits any more .. at least not from the carbs. I also put in new plugs, and ran can tune up in can. maybe I can get it out tomarrow afternoon to try it out.

My outboard was having the same problem, same symptoms. It was running lean from build-up in the carbs. I cleaned them myself a couple times, but was afraid to get in too deep because of sync problems. If you're still having trouble with it, I'd recommend Superior Marine in Soddy Daisy (423) 332-6212. They rebuilt my carbs last year. Decent rate, excellent work.

Sync Probs worried me too .. but If I cant figure out from the book . Ill just pay someone to sync it up .. one guy told me about hr labor to sync. Still better than 300 or so to do it all

I'm not sure where you live but there is a guy that lives off of East Valley road at Powells Cross roads that is very good and very reasonable on his rates he works at his home his name is Paul Graham his number is (423)658-5465 give him a call I think all he works on is Evinrude and Johnson engines.
