Does anyone have any experience painting aluminum boats? I thought there was a thread on here a while back, but I can't find it. I have an old, old, tracker that I have been "fixin up". I think a coat of paint would really do the trick, but don't know if its worth the effort or cost.

It's not a problem, I did it to an old jon boat I had back in college. The most important thing to do is to use self etching primer, which is specifically for such an application. Then get a quality paint to go over the primer.

I actually rolled the coat of paint in my jon boat and it looked really good. But most importantly is the self etching primer, which is found at any home improvement store.

You should call me.! I have access to aluminum primer which you will need or else your paint will not hold long.

Matter of fact, I have a whole gallon sitting on my shelf at home.

Don't paint the inside. Take it and have it lined with spray in bed liner material. Way too many benefits to mention. But the best advantage is that it insulates and quietens it down. Choose a light color so it will not be hot in the summer. I think you can even get White.

You could always sand the inside with 80 grit then roll or brush it on but spraying it is the best.

Try Truck N Trailers USA.

Our CFF expert is Cherokee Ridge in the paint bussiness. He has done it for years and still does on the side in a simi-retired way. He can tell you anything you need to know and he can get you the paint. He lives in Harrison by the park so he is easy to get to. His number is 316-1092, call him if you need to and have any questions.emoThumbsup Jmax

We sell a bed liner kit , I've never used one but I'll be glad to check on it for you, It should have everything you need . I'll look today and see what all's in it.

emoUpsmile I was wondering where you were CR. I knew a question about paint would not get by you without some kind of advice.emoBigsmile Jmax

I like the idea of the bed lining, however my boat is an old tracker with decking/carpet on the inside. I was looking for advice on the feasability of painting the outside of the hull, to try and refresh the look of this old boat. From what I am reading, it can be done with good results????? Or were you guys talking about the inside in all of these posts????? If it is an option, I will look to get it done in the winter, but if you guys with experience say it ain't worth it, then I'm going to just leave it as is.

Thanks

i painted the inside and outside of an old old jonboat i have about 10 or 12 years ago. a '56 polarkraft 14'. bought paint thinner and scraped and sanded all the old paint off, primed and painted it, but i used olive drab paint, not sure what color you want. the paint looks ok for being that old now, and i was 14 or so when i did it...not a pro painter by any means. but the paint on the outside is holding up nicely, granted a trolling motor is all that pushes this beast around

As far as the outside goes , BBass hit the nail on the head , a good high build etching primer and you will be ready to paint ,As Billy will tell you any time you are painting bare metal you MUST use etching primer , The high build part will help hide minor flaws in the surface you are painting. Hope this helps. Let us know how it turns out.

Thge spray in liner isVERY different than the stuff that you apply in layers yourself. Have it sprayed with the new chemicals if you or anyone is planning to do this.
