I know this particular story belongs in Hunting Forum, but it could apply to fishing. I just wanted more folks to read it.
Story from a good friend of mine who asks to remain anonymous:

I was out scouting and started walking the flat near the edge where it drops off into a creek bottom lined with a tangle of Mountain laurel. About 30 yards away I spot a tree stand. As I approach to see if it has a name on it I spot a pile of corn 10 feet or so in front of the stand. Just to the right of the stand is a camera pointed at the corn. I back out and head for my ATV. On my way back to the truck I saw 2 ATV's with a couple guys ducking behind them. When I get back to the truck I decide that I'll follow through with what I told myself the next time I found baiting. I called the poacher hotline. This was around 6:30 on a Friday evening so I was not surprised when I was forwarded to a voice mail system. I left as much info as I could recall and all of the phone numbers I could be reach at. Later that evening I realized I forgot to mention that the bait was on state property so I called the hot line again. This time the phone is answered. I tell her who I was and explain that I had left a message earlier. She said she had just listened to my message and was getting ready to pass it along to a wildlife officer. When I give her the added info. She asks me to hold ... she comes back and tells me Officer Majors will be calling me shortly. Matt calls and wants to know if I can take him to the area this evening. Told him that's why I called. He said he had to check a couple of other bait sites elsewhere but would be to my area as soon as possible. Matt and Greg Atchley pulled up around 8:30. We drove to the area. They marked it on GPS and found another stand close by which was where I had seen the 2 ATV's earlier. Matt said he would stake it out the next morning. A few days later Matt told me he got two people for hunting over bait, plus other charges... and 2 other guys were cited for not having their orange on. I ended up hunting a 1/2 mile or so away from where I had found the baiting.

great to know it works 2nd time i heard that this year. I know a guy who was fishing below watts bar dam and saw to guys pull up and bust to deer in the field across from the lock he coudnt find poaching # so he called lockmaster and ask him if he heard the shots he said no. He ask him to call poaching hotline and he did just so happens to twra officers were right down the road watching a fields down there so the came up to the lock as fast as they could get there and caught the 2 guys going after the deer they shot. He was telling me this and i opened my phone and gave him the poaching hotline #. I got the # off of a post on here i belive DHaun made.

I hope they stuck it to those poaching idiots. I was reading an aricle in the North American Whitetail magazine and it opened my eyes to the fact that we have to win the war against poachers because they are the demize (sp?) of our beloved sport. Its just too easy to kill a deer or catch fish legally if you just put in the time and effort to do it right.

Thanks for sharring Richard! If the News stations would air these stories maybe it would deter more poachers!?

Of Course You know I agree! I will go out day or night....rain or shine to catch someone who violates game and fish laws. All you have to do is call!!! I hear so many people who say "I saw somene poaching the other day and should have called you". Don't wait to call put TWRA's number in your cell phone today! Your call will help ensure the future of our sport!

Thanks Officer Majors and TWRA! It's great to have a simple hotline to call and to read your positive post knowing how difficult a task it must be to manage emoThumbsup

This sounds like a story a story I heard about except from the other end. The 2 guys that were poaching sounds like 2 guys that use to work with my next door neighbor......And believe me these two needed to get caught. If this is the same two they live some where over near Et.mtn. close to the river (but they poach in a lot of different area's). This is what they do year round, not just during deer season, according to the stories I've heard.

I'm glad that Majors or TWRA caught them, but I'm sorry to say that I don't think it will put a stop to these two, yet. The fines and cost was not enough to stop these two, they've been doing this for years, according to the stories I've heard. If this is the same two, their just a couple of drunken, drug using poachers, on any kind of outdoor actives they do.

Guys whats wrong with hunting over corn, nothing like sitting over a food plot next to a field of it. emoScratch emoSmile

Out4Fun,
Don't think that was the fellows caught. I heard this was on Sig. Mtn.
Thanks TWRA for the great job.

Possum the only difference is that the pile of corn is illegal and the field of it is legal. In Tennessee and Georgia these guys are called poachers and get arrested and jailed and or fined. In the Carolinas, Texas and many other states feeding the deer and hunting over it is perfectly legal. It just depends on where you live whether it is a crime or not.

I know, I was just being silly. What these poachers don't realize is that they are hurting themselves by putting the corn out. The deer will often stay nocternal on piled corn.

Thank you for the numbers and helping to protect ALL OF OUR valuable wildlife resources Matt. I just put them in my cell phone. I will call and meet an officer if I observe fish and game violations - any time and any day!

Now if only TWRA could do something about these timber companies clearing out all the hardwoods they can and planting back with friggin pines!!

Yeah I agree, hunting over bait is wrong..but what about protecting our wildlifes habitat!? TN is gonna be nothing but one giant pine forest if something isn't done to stop bowater and the other timber companies. What they are doing is a heck of a lot worse than a guy spreadin out them yellow acorns.
