We drove home from St. Louis today and it snowed on us off and on the whole way home. I had seen that the weather channel showed a front moving slowly Eastward and we went right through it today. It was snowing hard and 23 degrees in Nashville when we went through and when we got home today at 5:30 it was 32 degrees here and no snow. The wife had something that she had to get to tonight and I figured that the crappie might turn on like crazy with the front just behind us and I was right. I got to my spot at about 6pm and fished as long as I could stand it. I caught a fish on the first 5 casts even though I never saw the bites because of the huge bow in my line from the wind. The only indication of a fish was the line being too tight when I started reeling after a pause. The wind was so hard and cold that my fingers, even though I wore my winter gloves over Nitrile gloves, became so cold that I couldn't feel the tips other than terrible pain. What a wimp, huh? Ice was forming on my winter gloves told me that the wind chill was pretty bad. I finally quit after 40 minutes as I could no longer reposition the bait on the hook with my gloves on as my fingers wouldn't do what I wanted them to do. I ended up with 10 good slabs and had 3 or 4 pull off and one broke the line as I hauled him/her into the boat. Retying and trying to keep the boat in position was keeping me from getting good casts into the prime areas but I know the fish were just stacked there. The fish have been active from time to time at the hole that I went to but not nearly so active as today. I just looked at the weather channel again and the edge of the front has just gotten to us. If you remember, a couple of weeks ago, before the big snow we had, I went right before the snow hit and the bite was just the same, crazy! Today I had both the front coming and dusk and that really turned them on. I wish that I could have fished the area better but the wind was so bad and my fingers so numb that I just couldn't get good casts and presentations in. I think that a fish a minute could have been possible if the conditions for me had been better. It was a painful 30 minutes or so but I just didn't want to stop until I just had to. Once my hands thaw out I will go down and get a pic. I did have 3 over 13 inches and most all but one was over 12 inches. Spring will be here soon and fair weather will be nice for a change!

good catch
and no you are not a wimp. A wimp would have stayed indoors! (oh no, thats what I did)

You should have called, I had nothing to do! Way to go, you know how those fat crappie amaze me.

Sam, I would have but I didn't know if I was going to go until 5 minutes before I went. It did cross my mind as I was an hour away from home to call someone but I wasn't sure if Nan was going to go to her Choir thing until she left. Hopefully next time I'll have more lead in time.

Oops, I forgot the most important part. All fish caught at about a 6 count with 1/32 oz jigs, Panfish Assassins. Most bites after a "palsy twitch" a la DK. The water was cold and the creek has cleared. I didn't turn on my depthfinder but I would expect that the water temp was in the upper 30s. Some of the fish came even before the retrieve began hitting after an initial twitch.

You are really dedicated, Polo. And you can sure catch crappie. I'm the wimp. I'll make it out there in a couple more weeks. emoBigsmile emoGeezer

Good job Mark, I have been camped in the house other than walking the dogs. It took me 2 days to get rid of the chill from the last time out on the lake. I think you have the front thing well figured out. Hopefully the weather will warm up soon and we all can have a pleasant time on the lake. Thanks for the report, I continue to learn from every one.

Regards, Norman

I'm with you DK. That is unless we're after sauger or walleye, then "that's different."

Your HARD CORE Mark!

This is a perfect example of why 10% of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish.
Awesome! Thanks for the info.

I think that the places where the fish are stacked right now will stay great until the water warms up significantly. If and when the water warms up significantly other places will get better. I also think that the main lake will really become good if it becomes fishable with the flow decreasing out there. There are lots of variables in play and I would test a few different places as the water warms and the flow decreases. I hope that you do well.
