Has anyone experienced a popping noise when you trim your engine up and down?

I have a Mercury 150 XR6 and it started a couple of weeks ago and this weekend the popping sound seemed to be louder. The popping noise is more loud when lowering the engine. it will make the popping noise from 2 to 5 times when lowering the engine all the way. If someone has experience this issue with your trim then let me know what you did to fix it.

Thanks,
Basshopper

There is a grease fitting on it. You should try greasing it to see if it goes away. The tilt tube is the pivot point. More than likely dry.

I did grease it but it didn't help the day after I first heard the noise. I found two grease fittings, maybe I missed one. I will check again

Thanks James

The tips of the trim rams have a ball in them. When dry they pop and crack when the weight of the engine is sitting on them. Run a little grease on the tip of your finger and swipe the tips of the rams. It will be as quiet as a mouse for about 4 months till you need to do it again. Don't overgrease those fittings you found. It causes more problems than it solves.

What he said. Grease on the tip will likely fix it. I have a 150 Yamaha and have to grease them every so often or it sounds like my motor is going to fall off when trimming down.

If it does it only when it contacts the 2 smaller rods, then that probably isit. Wasn't it doing it all the way up when it was here?

Great Tip 3391. I've been leaving my boat on Guntersville lake. I'm going down Friday afternoon and willl grease the tips soon as I arrive. I will report back after the holiday.

Thanks,

David

I may be wrong. That is why I suggested greasing the tilt tube. I have also looked at a few boats since then. emoBigsmile

Update.... I put some grease on my index finger and rubbed it on top of the pins. I lowered the engine and it was all quiet.

Thanks for the great tip.
