hey guys just looking for some help I came back from florida Tuesday night went to lower raise my motor and it barely came up enough to take my motor toater off well I got it off and the motor just went down slowly without trimming down and would trim back up but not all the way. I checked the fluid with front of boat all the way down and ended up putting some in it but still wont raise motor up or hold but none of the seals are visually leaking any help would be great and if yall know anybody that can fix it for me thanks

what motor is this trim for? I have one i can sell, its for larger OMC OBs.

This could be a couple different issues. Yes, a leaking seal could be the culprit, bad terminal connections, and/or a motor on its way out(usually brushes, or corrosion). Anyway, this could definitely be repaired. Its just usually a lot of work getting them off the boat for service. THat being said, Im certain a seal kit and a motor rebuild or replace will get you fixed up.

that's alright, unfortunately i'm not much one to recommend folks for work, as I do all my own work no matter what it is, minus anything to do with welding, working props, and machining work.

I have the same issue but mine is on a 77 johnson 140. I have looked into seal kit for the tilt cylinder and rebuilding the motor as well. But have just learned to deal with it. But the last time I had it out the trim would not trim all the way up under full throttle. I had to back off the gas a little to trim it up where it needed to be.

I had a problem with my trim not lifting the motor. I released the manual screw, raised the motor, filled the reservoir and cycled it up and down 5 times. I rechecked the oil, topped off and it works great now.

I'll just chime in on this thread since I'm having trouble with mine too. I have a mariner 40 hp and the tilt motor just clicks and doesn't run. I had the motor down to check it out and now it won't go up. Is there a way to release the lift so I can lift it manually? I can't get to the lift mechanism at all with the motor down. I don't think I can get the motor off the boat, just not able.
It has done this a lot over the years I've had the boat but after a couple tries it usually starts working. I found the wire from the motor down to the electric motor was rotten so I cut the bad section out and tried running it directly from a 12 volt battery, still just clicks and draws a lot of amps.
Any help would be appreciated.

I've totally bypassed the relays. Hooked the lift motor directly to 12vdc. I've tried both ways and it won't move. If I understand the way these work, it is under pressure when it's down and the pressure is less when it is in the raised position.

Well, I finally found my manual. This unit has a bleed valve at the bottom of the motor mount on the starboard side. I opened it up 3 turns and then I could lift the motor up like full tilt. I blocked it up and pulled the top off the electric motor and pulled it. It had gotten some water in it somehow and was pretty rusted up. I can't get the armature out, so I'll have to pull the whole thing to see if it can be salvaged.
Now, if I can just get it to start. :(

Bobby, not sure about the Yamaha, but I have had the same issue on occasion with both Black and Blue motors...called a manual release valve. Its a valve designed to 'fail' if you hit something. Occasionally, they would fail on their own with age as I recall. They also can come loose, check and make sure its closed all the way-tight. Check schematic online and see if that motor has one. If that's not it, I used to Trans-X my TnT and it did a pretty good job on worn seals.

My motor started getting weak and it finally putted out. just kept getting weaker. I found good deals on them on ebay and been happy ever since@

Cleaned up the little motor and got it back together. Now is running better than it ever has, at least a lot quieter. Also, got the boat motor to start up. It's running pretty rough and won't idle. I'll put some new plugs in it and see if it runs any better.

The Yamaha tilt motor is probably ok, sounds like an internal seal is leaking. Especially if the motor slowly goes back down after raising it. Checkout the manual release also, it has some kind of seal in it as well. My book for the Mariner tells how to bleed the system like you would your brakes but I think air in the system would make stop going up or down or have some jerky action. Good luck with yours, thanks for getting me working on mine, I just needed a nudge.

Be sure to always cycle the motor up and down at least three times when your fluid gets very low releasing the air each time. There is a proper procedure for doing this that must be followed.; if not you are leaving air inside the unit which will not lift. Once you know all the air is out and you still have problems then you can look at seals, pumps, etc. Low levels of fluid and or air in the system will cause it not to work properly............
