Went out to Prentice spontaneously yesterday afternoon. Covered alot of ground and did not see or hear anything until right before dark. I just happened to spot some birds in a field about a mile away on another mountain. We sat and strained our eyes looking at what looked like turkeys. We started calling and not long I spotted a bird running down the mountain in our direction about a 1/2 mile away. It got dark and we had to leave. Last night I studied some topo maps and figured out how to get around and above those birds in the morning. Chris and I were hiking in the moonlight and above the birds before sunrise. It was a text book hunt, the birds hammered off of roost and hit the ground running. We had a flock of decoys in the field but the birds came in behind us. Chris was unable to get turned around and at 10 yards, I shot the first of the two strutters. An hour later we got on some more birds that we worked for over an hour only to end up bumping them before getting Chris got a shot. My bird had a 9.5 inch beard and weighed 17.5 lbs. My first PC bird, and it was fun! Today was the last of a 5 day hunt and was the 10th of 11 birds killed so far this season, the cold weather has made it tough lately according to the guys at the checking station.
