Had a stock 23 picth prop had a good holeshot and 54mph on top end . Went to a 23 picth tempest plus and lost my good hole but i got 61 mph and top end. My question is why did i loose my holeshot? emoScratch emoScratch

Differnt blade widths, progressive pitch, diameter, and rake all have a factory. All props react differently. I went to the lake with a modified merc v-6 with 7 props. The fastest was a 23 quicksilver and the slowest was a 23 quicksilver. Even though they were both mercury stainless they were different part numbers with clearly different rake. The faster one didn't have exhaust reliefs and was a dog out of the hole but was the faster one on top. There was nearly 8 MPH between them. The tempest are not know hole shot props to begin with. The laser is a better prop on most boats. But of course there are ALOT of factors to consider. Hope this helps!

Ask Ditchdoc about his....we tried 11 different props on his and his 23 laser WAS the best untill he tried my 24 small ear chopper. STRONG hole shot and a the fastest top end so he got both..The hole shot and top end. Even though it is faster it is easier for him to drive. The next one is a 22 big ear. We will find out wednesday. Later!!!

I have always wondered how you determine what prop to buy? Is there some standard to go by- boat length, motor size, beam, combination of these?

I get the impression from all the posts I see about props, some people have a multitude of them. Is this due to buying different ones on trial-and-error?

The hull design will have alot ot do with it. Alot of questions come into play like. Do you need a prop that will lift the bow or the stern? Is the hull built for spped or ride? Do you have a low water pick up? ECT>>>>I have seen a simple prop change make a 8 MPH increase. It is sometimes hard to find a good all around prop. The best thing is to search and find someone who has tested all the other ones. Sometimes a engine can turn a bigger pitch prop more rpms because the prop can lift the boat more thus resultingin more speed. It is like comparing not trimming the engine and trimming it up. Hope this doesn't confuse you. Later.
