I had the day off today and ever since I read the report of the Lafayette Lake Tournament I've been wanting to give Queen City another try. It has been about a year since the last time I was there. I had the boat in the water by 9 am and decided to make the long troll to Lake Howard Rd. I started fishing blowdowns and got the first hit approx. 20 min. later. NICE fish that jumped, smiled at me, and spit my spinner bait right back at me. emoBang Few cast later I was running my sb around a collapsed boat dock and BANG! I got a good hook set on this on. Boated him. 3lbs. 2 oz on my brand new berkley digital scales. I fished for a couple more hours with nothing. Then I found them. Boated 3 in the next 30min all shorts but fun! As my day was winding down along with my trolling motor battery, I decided to hit up that spot where I lost that first fish. I'm not sure if it was the same fish, but HOLY COW! First cast into that blown down tree and BAM! He crushed my sb. He started pulling drag, and I knew I had him this time. Grabbed the net with my free had and got him. 4lb. 11 oz. All in all a beautiful day on the water. No wind. I even got a little sunburn. emoCool

Sorry for the quality of the pic! I've never put a pic on the site and not sure if i'm resizing it right? I'm going to try and download the pic of the 3lb now!

Nice fish! Is Queen City a pay lake or members only? I can recall renting a small johnboat at a lake in Lafayette with my Dad when I was younger and it was full of stumps. Would that be Queen City Lake?

Queen City is not a pay lake or private lake. There are no rental boats there that I know of. It's public and open to all.

Nice Fish FJ. I know both those spots well.

Hope you decide to fish the tourny Sunday.

Thanks! Not sure jason. There is a small lake on hwy 136 that has a marina. It may be that one, but I haven't seen anyone in a boat on that lake in a very long time.

hl&s, I'm going to come back down Sunday and check you're tourny out but I only have a jon boat and no way of keeping the fish alive. But I am interested to see how other folks do on that lake.

polo, today I threw a white/bleeding bait with a single willow leaf. Also tried chart/white but all fish were caught on the w/bb.

Do you know what size the willow leaf blade was? I think that I tend to fish blades that are too big most of the time. I tend to fish a number 4.5 to 5 willow a lot of the time and lots of folks fish 4s or even smaller. That just seems very small to me but guys catch fish with them.

Queen City lake is owned by the City of LaFayette and is open to the public. It is trolling motor only although you can have a gas motor on your boat you just can't start it. The boat ramp is right behind the high school but it really stinks. The ramp is in real shallow flat water and you have to back your truck into the lake before the boat will float off the trailer. They have been talking about improving it for years but to my knowledge have not done it yet. Fishing is really good in the lake for bass. Lots of big fish are caught every year. It is also a great channel cat fishery. there are lots of crappie too but run pretty small as they are under fished for the most part.

Jason,
There is another smaller lake on 136 just as you reach Lafayette called Gordon's Lake. As far as I know it has always been members only with an annual membership fee. It has a small boat house/marina type building in one of it's corners. I've never fished it or inquired directly about it as I have heard the membership fee was rather steep and the lake is small. I have been told it has a lot of stumps.

QC lake did have a small store on the lakeshore when it was opened to the public in the seventies that was owned by Jim ?. He had a small dock and at one time had a couple rental boats. It's been gone for years with only residential sites remaining on the shore. There are a couple of shallow water stump fields at the northern part of the lake.

Gordon Pond is members only with a $5000 that's right FIVE THOUSAND dollar dollar membership plus a yaearly maintenance fee. Members can bring guests only if they do not live in Walker County. The only way to acquire a membership is when someone dies off. It is almost like a cult with bankers, doctors and lawyers being members. Word is that 2 pound shellcrackers and 3 pound crappie and 10 pound bass and 30 pound cats abound in the lake. We all know how words are. One thing I know for sure is that if you get caught fishing there you will be penalized to the fullest extent of the law. And then some! They are so bad there that they had a friend of mine who owns adjoning property arrested for fishing in an overflow pool on his own property. He got fined and it stuck!

What ever happened to "Ed's Lake"? It was located a couple miles north of LaFayette and about a mile to the East of Hwy 27. In the past, it was a pay to fish lake. They had boat rentals, a campground and picnic areas. Many years ago, I would go there to fish on a regular basis. That is the only place that I fished for Bass that cranking a silver spoon above the grass flats was the preferred method to catch those big bass.

LL,

I thought Ed's lake was drained into QC when it was filled. I remember catching a few cats there in the sixties although I only fished it a couple of times. I also remember some of the locals telling me that all of the snakes in QC came from Ed's lake. LOL

Cheez,

I knew it was high but I was thinking more like $500 a year, not 5 G's. Then again, I really don't know much about the rich and famous ! Some of the fish tales about Gordons rank amoung the best of all time. But for 5 G I'll let someone else see if their true.

Cheez, it looked to me that they have improved the gravel road that leads down off the road to the ramp but you're right about the ramp. It is very shallow there. It seems to be a pretty popular fishing spot though. When I arrived I was the only truck in the parking area and by the time I was leaving (4pm) there were at least 5 more trucks w/ trailers and about 10 other cars. I guess they were all bank fishing at the dam.

Ed's lake has been privatly owned for the past few years. I have heard of some monsters in that lake. Ed's is about 1mile from my house

Skeeter I thought you lived in Rock Spring?

Ed's lake has always been privately owned. When the old man died the heirs just shut it down for a while. then they leased it to a sportsman's club for a while and now I don't know what has happened to it. I do know that they never drained it to fill Queen City lake. We fished both lakes for years before they shut Ed's down. A big reason for Queen City having the big bass and cats is because back when we used to get flooding rains every year Ed's would overflow big time and the fish would swim down Town Creek to Queen City. Another reason is that Queen City Lake is very fertile and has been there for nearly 30 years.

LL don't you know there are some big cats in Ed's lake now. Terry Haney and I were catching 8 to 10 pound cats on a regular basis back in the 70's!

The DNR shocked the lake last year or the year before. They also put out nets. I talked to them as they were taking their boat out. They said the lake was full of healthy bass. It was an odd feeling seeing a boat running across the lake at a good speed, they ran there 90 hp engine all morning. I think they did a fairly in depth study. I know they came at least 3 or 4 times, I seen them there.
