I have just bought my brother a beginner boat. It didnt come with a motor but has controls for 90 model mercury 150. He has found an older inline 6 mercury 150 that runs excellent. Will the controls work with this motor or do the controls have to match the motor exactly? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

not sure but i think they will work.give wrechin2 a pm on here or call him and he can tell u for sure. james 423-304-0930

The inline should have the round plug on the side of it. The 150 L6 was made from 1973 to 1978 and it will need an adapter that is $218 from CDI. Some of the inlines in the early 80's had the cannon plug and would bolt and hook right up. The 115 inline from 1983-up is basicly the old 150 due to they changed how the rated the HP. 83-up are rated at the prop so the old 150 is a 115 by todays standards. Plus they had 2 different bolt patterns where they attach to the boat. So the are a few different things you may run into. Just my thoughts and experiences.

What kind of boat is it? The old in-line 150 can not compare to the V-6 2L 150 in power even though they are both "150" hp. The in-line may not be a good choice for your application. I may know where a V-6 150 is for a decent price if he still has it and if your are interested.

emoUpsmile What he said

Go with the V6

The old inline 6's had the best sound when running wide open at 6 grand but they could not compete with the V6's for power

Thanks for the tips James. Its an older astro fish and ski. My brother don't care too much about speed he just wants something to get out and have fun in. Besides the Guy only 150 bucks for the motor. I will find out more about the year model and get back with you. Thanks again.

That is awful cheap even for a engine of that age. Has he seen it run on a boat going down the water and not just on a hose? They can run great on a hose and not move out of thier own wake on the water especially on a heavier hull like the astro. Like I stated before, there may be a lot involved in changing it over if it is actually the older engine as the trim pump is inside the boat, the bolt pattern to mount it on the transom is different, the controls will have to be adapted or changed, ect. Just my thoughts.
