Today I was fishing a tournament and went to move with the motor trimed up. i just put it in gear and while turning about 1500 to 2000 rpm it sounded like something was slipping at the prop, it sounded like a knock and at first I thought the hub was slipping. I trimmed the motor all the way down and it quit the knocking. Threw the gas to it and it shot up on plane and never knocked again until I ran it up on the trailor and again with the motor trimmed up to push the boat on the trailor it started this knocking.
My fishing buddy said that he had a 150 EFI and it did a very simular thing so he took it to a mech. and he said the linkage in the motor needed adjusting. Could this be my problem?

I did not hit a thing and like I said I trimmed it all the way down it it performs like a scaldded dawg.

ARE you are talking about putting in gear THEN turning 1500-2000??? I hope you didn't mean turning 1500-2000 and putting in gear.

A adjustment could take care of it. It could be the clutch dog and the lugs on the gears are worn and not fully engaging. The "popping" could be the result of this. A little bit of wear can be masked by adjusting the cable. If the get really rounded off, then it becomes very expensive.

How do you shift??? Fast and firm or slow and easy???

If you call me, I will walk you through adjusting it.

Turns out it wa a thrust washer that was shot causing the prop to rub the lower unit casing, gears and clutch dog looks great, gear lube a little milkey (new seals).
Wish I had to $$$$ to let James perform a little magic on it.

Good deal!

Those are strong engines to begin with. They are on the high side of the +/- side o the hp rating and are real close to 175HP.

Wouldn't think that as slow as my boat is. :(</p>

May be in your set up or you may have a tired one. You would be surprised what a prop change can do for one.

All the "XR" series of engine have just a little more power than the standard 150's. This was to stay up with OMC's "XP" and "GT" engines that were also under rated.

Fishinvol,
I will be on the lake Sunday above the dam. If you want to try some props on yours, I will be there testing some on a Bullet.
