Ive got something to ask but im not sure I want to know the answer, emoScratch Ive found four yellow jackets nest dug out of the ground on my property, now I was reading today that the only thing that will do that is bear, When I found them I figured that it was a coon or possum,, Anyone know what does this??? Never seen a bear around my place "or tracks" lots of yota's, but I could see that they might be there,,, The nest where only about 50yrds from the house,,,Ive also found small tree's 1" to 3" snaped off about 6ft off the ground for no reason next to the trails...Ive also never seen a marked up tree "clawed"
Do I have a bear??? emoEnforce
Thanks guys...

Very possible PJ. I dont think Coons or Opossums would fool with the Jackets. I've seen plenty up in Cohutta and have been hearing reports of some over off of Johns Mtn. They could easily come from that area and head down your way

... sounds like a Black Bear to me! Go get you a huge bag of old {cheaper that way}sweet rolls and donuts from a bakery and hang them up a few feet off the ground, you'll find out!

My Dad wanted me to post a message when he read your post. He said that he thinks that you might have a skunk. He said that he saw a skunk come up to a yellow jacket nest while he was in a treestand and observed a skunk wave his tail over the hole to agitate the YJ until they came to attack at which point the skunk would kill the YJ. When he thought most of them were gone he would proceed to dig up the nest toget to the sweet stuff. He seems to think that this is more likely your problem.

I was told by a co worker that this is in Polk co. couple days ago

Skunks, they will get the larvy and eat them. That would be more likely. :) Jmax

Skunks, coyotes, foxes will all dig up yellow jacket nests. But it is very likely that you may have a bear around. If you do have a bear around they'll be into your garbage soon. Sardines work as well if not better than sweet rolls!
