I am going to try to get up to the Chick Dam and fish for spots around there Saturday. Where can I go to get some skipjacks around that area for bait? Is there a limit on them, length/creel?

John, I hope you aren't trying to fish for spots with skipjacks are you? They are a tad big, most fishermen use the skipjacks for catfish bait by cutting them up. You may mean the yellowtails, these are used for bait for spots, smallmouths, largemouths. Both can be found below the dams, chick and Nick. You dip or throw a cast net for the yellowtails and catch the skipjacks on little cleo's, white leadheads which you fish very fast. The skipjacks will be busting the water eating the small shad fry.

Um, no. I am not that stupid, Doc. ;) I am wanting to get some skipjacks in the freezer for catfishing this winter and next year, etc. I know better than to use the skippies for spots.

You can fish for those really big "striped spots" with skippies.

IMPORTANT NOTE - If you toss a castnet in the current below the dam just be sure to keep it shallow and have it rigged so as to be able to get it off your wrist fast. If you should get it hung on the bottom it could yank you from the boat and pull you down in the strong current and hold you there.. This should be understood by all who tosses a net in the current. I suggest and recommend that you tie the end of the castnet rope to your front boat cleat.
