My ole 997 hummingbird is getting touchy. I am ready to upgrade. Looking at helix GN3 Si/Di. In order to educate myself better, will I need to replace my tru-hull skimmer puck for depth at high speed and get a new y cable? I was hoping it would be just a transducer and head unit changeout. Also are those skimmer pucks easy to remove after being glued for 6 years? Never removed one if I have too?

Yes, you’ll need a Ycable and a puck transducer for through hull on plane depth readings. The SI transducer will only read at very low speeds like idle. I went through this whole process already lol. Mine works great.

Here is what Humminbird recommends; a Helix Mega unit requires an updated y-cable but you can use the new Y-cable with the 800, 900 0r 1100 series. The Mega will also use the same XP 9 20 most of you have as shoot thru the hull transducers, BUT you will not be receiving the full potential from your 2 D. The XP-9 HW transducer is the dual spectrum chirp transducer of choice for the Mega unit. 800, 900 and 1100 series can also use the XP 9 HW. Some of my distributors are discontinuing to carry the XP 9 20, so eventually there will be just the new XP 9 HW.

Clear as mud, right? Call me if you have questions
