I fished Lake Junior today to bring home some fish for diner tonight. Trout were stocked around the first of the year and then again last Wednesday. I was told over 2000 fish were stocked this week.

The fish were just not biting today. Well let me say it a different way, "very few fish noticed my bait". I have noticed for the last Four years of trout fishing in that lake that there is an occurance where the fish are not being caught right after being stocked. What I think is happening is that those fish are accustom to being fed in the hatchery ponds. I think that they are all in a big wad suspended out in the middle of the lake waiting on food pellets to hit the water and not out searching for food. By next weekend they will be hungry and will spread out and starting to feed. I have noticed that they travel in the big school for weeks. If you are not catching fish then no one near you is either. When the trout move in, then everyone gets fish until the fish move on.

That is a great place to take your kids and let then catch some trout.

There are certain ways that you must present your bait in order to catch those trout. I use Berkley Power bait and the Berkley Power Balls. Carolina rig with a bullet sinker that you can cast a mile and use a maximum 4lb test leader 3' long so as to allow the power bait to float up off the bottom. I use the light wire hooks that will allow the bait to float it better. The trout are feeding on suspended baits.

I brought home only six. That seventh fish was just too hard to get today.

David I have noticed the exact same phenomenon where I trout fish. Tralyta Lake at Vogel State Park in Blairsville, GA. It usually only takes a couple days for the trout to get over the stress of being moved from the comfort of their hatchery pools to an open lake. When they do you can usually limit out in a short time with the method you mentioned whish is my favorite way to catch trout as well.

Another great way to catch them at Lake Junior is with a minner under a float. Just like Crappie fishing, and you may catch a Crappie or two in there too.

All State regs apply. Must have a trout stamp.

Lake Junior is located off Amnicola Hwy at the intersection at Hwy 153. Turn onto the access road to the Chickamauge tailwater area. Turn right between the gates at the first road to the right off Amnicola Hwy. Can't miss it. Bring the kids.
