Do any of you guys know of any public ranges or open memberships to local gun/sportsmans clubs? I am needing a place to take my son shooting, and start teaching him the fundamentals of shooting before this upcoming deer season. He just got a new rifle!!!! emoBigsmile emoBigsmile

the range at Prentice Cooper is pretty nice. They have a 100 yd, 25yd and 10 yd. You may want to call the forest ranger and check the hours that it is open. I have driven out there on a few occasions to find it closed.

But very nice facility and benches.

I just called, FYI Range is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, opens at noon on Sunday, and is open from Sunrise to Sunset every other day according to some guy in the Forrestry Dept.

To get there, do I go towards Signal Mountain, take Suck Creek Rd to Game Reserve Rd?

Theres an open trange in plok county. Might be to far for you i dont know. There is also a gun club in cleveland off blue springs road if you want more info PM me and ill see what i can dig up for you.

Yep, you will follow the signs to Prentice Cooper. Once in the park, the entrance to the range is pretty close. It is clearly marked and has a gate at the entrance to it.

If you're still having trouble finding it, roll down your window and follow the gun shots!

It is closed for big game hunts so you need to check the wma book to make sure there are no hunts going on.

Prentice cooper is nice for a free range. BUT, you might want to watch out at times is seems to attract some "less than safe" folks. if at all possible i'd recommend going on a weekday, also it can get crowded so don't be suprised to see all the lanes full on a sat or sun

I shoot Prentice Cooper on occasion, but I do not like it. It can get crowded at times and I have seen unsafe shooters there. About 3 years ago I got a membership in the Chattanooga Rifle Club and I love it. I dont know how long the waiting list is now but it would be worth a try. I take my son there some to shoot.

I can agree with the "unsafe shooters" at Prentice Cooper. Last time I was there I was setting up targets on the 100 yd and a group of ...non sportsmen ignored the "Hold" call and started firing on the 25, which sent me diving and screaming into the bushes. Needless to say the others on the 50 and I had alot of words with them. But, the problem is thats the only place I know of around here. I did read somthing about the Hamilton Co. gun club at a range but I cant say for sure wheather or not they have their own. My advice is, also, to go on a weekday to avoid the crowd and CALL AHEAD (I have been there many a time only to have to drive an hour back because it is closed for god knows what, I don't know if managed hunts are over but I was back a month ago and they had it cloesed on weekends. )

Does anyone have the new number to check the dates? I found one on TWRA's website about a year ago that was just a recording but they have turned that one off.

(I would make the offer for you to come out to my place, I have about 50 +/- yards and a good bank to fire into with neighbors that don't care, but I don't know if that would be ok or not with the family and i'm an hour from Hamilton Co. if you take 111. I learned to shoot everything here as a kid and its a good start because there are no houses behind the target area and rocks to protect the road about 300+ yards past it (which is about 50 yards higher that the target area, I live, litteraly, under the bluff line on the Mtn.) If anyone is seriously interested I can check into it, but I can only accomodate one or two people at a time. Though, I can't give any soild answer at this time)

I've had good luck at Prentice Cooper, but I always go during the week when it is less crowded. I've heard some bad stories from the weekend when it is so crowded. One thing to keep in mind is when you leave the range, don't turn to the right and go into the park. You can't have guns on the park and I know a couple of guys that got stopped because the ranger saw them turn in from the gun range. They also do not allow shotguns there.

Is there any place close by to shoot some clays. We used to shoot up here in cleveland but it was shut down. Now that it is nice out I would like to shoot a couple rounds
