Re: Guided trout fishing on Caney Fork auction winner

Hey guys,

Back when the guided trips were being offered for auction to help the little girl with cancer, I had put and auction up for a guided trip down the Caney Fork river to get on a few trout. Since then I have been extremely busy and have basically fallen off with my posts. Some how, in the meantime my inbox was cleaned out and I no longer have the contact info of the man who won that auction.

If the winner of my auction is still a member of this forum and gets this post or anyone knowing this person, please send me a message and give me your contact info again.

The river has been very tough for live bait fishermen for the last two months or so due to a change in the diet of the trout on the Caney Fork. In fact, several of the days I've gone out, I've had a very hard time trying to finesse even a few fish to take the bait. With a little change in tactics, I have been able to up my catch rate, by casting little speed minnows and small jerk baits. But for the first time in years, I actually see flyfishermen outfish livebait fishermen two to one.

Nice Browns are still being caught in logjams throwing large streamers and twitch minnows and the average rainbow has been a respectable 15" to 20" fish, which by the way is a fat healthy fightin' machine.

Again, I appologize for the lost information on the guy who had won my auction, but surely somebody out there can help me with this situation. The trip is still on, although I would wait until the livebait fishing picks back up in a few weeks, due to the difference in the # of fish being caught. The TVA is changing its generation schedule again to a one hour pulse schedule twice daily and a 3 hour generation schedule from like 4 to 7 or 5 til 8 @ night. Bottom line, that translates to morning and early afternoon fishing.

Thanks again guys in advance for any info on that auction winner.

CB - Don't feel bad - we had a hard time trying to hook up earlier in the year - I have been very busy with work this summer - I just wanted to donate the $$, fishing is a bonus. Give me a msg when things heat up real nice on the caney - if your still offering I would love to see that water.

Ol' Reliable,

Absolutely!! The trip is still yours anytime you want to go! Just PM me your contact info again and I'll let you know when livebait fishin' gets hot. Flyfishermen are giving me hell. I saw two guys today catch twenty in about as many minutes as they slowdrifted my stretch of river.

I've been very busy this summer as well and it seems I can't hardly steal a break to get out and fish. I went this morning and got to the water at about 7:30 or so. Fish were just starting to roll on the little blackfly midges that seemed to be everywhere. Even the swallows came out in droves divebombing insects like they hadn't eaten all year.

I could see trout everywhere, even a few of the real big "pigs", but couldn't give away free redworms. Powerbait, nothing. Threw a coupla new twitch minnows in shad and rainbow patterns, didn't even get a follow. Finally, about 10:30, I managed to site cast to a couple of 18" rainbows laying on top of this little patch of limestone bottom. Got one to at least nip my redworm in half. Hooked up a fresh worm and just hooked him once (something I do when they're real finicky, keeps the worm goin' crazy for the sec it takes to float by a nice wary trout), it got ones attention, and I ended up with a nice fish for supper(full of egg roe when I cleaned her). Took me 5 minutes to get that fish in on 6lb line. She sung line at least ten times.

Managed one more fish on, not quite as big as the first, but due to new line I put on the reel last night, I ended up foolin' with a nice birdnest before I could get her in. She came off at my feet. Two more strikes to mention and then the rising water got to my stretch and it was time to call it a day.Too many bird nests to stay and contend with anyhow. Started gettin' frustarted!

Which reminds me, I've tried every way you can put new line on a spinning reel and it never fails to shoot off the reel for the first coupla trips. What in the world, do you have to do, to get the kinks out of new line on spinning reels? I know about the ol' trick of lettin' it all out behind the boat, then winding it all back in. But what to do if you are in the river, wading? Flourocarbon line sinks and gets tangled up on the bottom if the current isn't fast enough. Any ideas?

All in all, great day to be alive and fishin'!

Re: Guided trout fishing on Caney Fork auction winner

Are you setting the spool on end on the floor and keeping the rod tip over it as you wind ?

Re: Guided trout fishing on Caney Fork auction winner

Nah, I usually put a pen or pencil in the hole of the spool and take it off in one direction. Meaning I wind the line onto the reel and the spool just sits there and spins, using just enough pressure on the spool to keep it from spinning out of control.

What am I doing wrong?

Re: Guided trout fishing on Caney Fork auction winner

That is how you put line on a bait-caster. To spool a spinning reel, put the line spool on end and wind onto the reel from the top .Wind a few cranks and lower the rod tip to the line spool causing slack. If the slack twists on itself a bunch ,you have to flip the spool over and wind over that end. That way it is coming off like it was put on there.
It makes a world of difference and will greatly reduce your line twist problem.
