So my engine started not running good, several weekends ago. I looked at everything and could not figure it out, so I finally checked compression. 135, 135, 128, 20, 135, 135. So obviously a problem with cylander 4. TRied to run it again to see if maybe something was stuck, did not help. Took the spark plug out and you cannot even see into the cylander where there is so many aluminum flakes across the top. They have even formed into the shape of the bottom of the spark plug. I have to rebuild this powerhead before it goes back out. So I feel pretty good about taking this thing apart, but wondered if someone had any tips, or tools where they had done this before. Need a puller for the flywheel I believe and I am sure other tools when I get into it. I have a Seloc book for this engine and looks fairly reasonable. I figured once I got it apart I could have someone put new rings on for me, but I don't have the cash to pay someone to do the entire job, and I cannot risk messing up the engine anymore by running it, AND I need to get back out on the water as soon as possible.

Thanks for any advice if you got it

For the flywheel puller you can use a harmonic puller. Make sure to go and get grade 8 bolts @ ace or somewhere like that. I pulled the flywheel on mine and it worked great. Make sure to not use the pullers that pull from the outside. The rings aren't as hard, however once you get into the block, you may see that the wall is scored and has indentintions and then you would have to get it bored out and possibly put an oversized piton in it, or maybe get it resleeved. Be acrefuly when taking the block apart, becase you shuoldn't use anythig to pry it apart becuase these surfaces must match back up. My other suggestion is takes lots of pics of every step saved me in the long run when Iwas wroking on mine.

I have a puller you can use give me a call 423 605 5933

Paul Nichols can help you as well. I might take you fishing while you're down if I can get some time. You stay on the far left side and I will stay on the right:)

I have a Mercury lifting eye and a flywheel puller. I might have a service manual. If you need to borrow PM me.

Those type of pullers won't work on a merc motor.

emoLaugh Yeah hopefully we would not kill each other. Its funny I do have friends and family on each side and some how we still get along, even love each other.

I have tools and tips for that engine. I also have a running lat model 87 powerhead or whole engine. which is basicly the late 70's 140 (due to horspower rating change to propshaft instead of crank) but with all the nice upgrades of ADI ignition. Same ignition as the V-6 and intergrated trim where it all on the engine. My first rebuild was a tower of power> I also have a parts engine 115. Give me a call and I will tell you how to cheaply get the pistons BACK> WHAT FUN cause you have to put all 6 in at the same time!!!!!! James 423-304-0930 Later
