Sportsman wants $250.00 + tax to remove the parts. Is that about the right price range? Can I just disconnect the horn wire and start mixing oil with the fuel? My 90 Merc is 15 Y.O. and Sportsman recommended I have it done.

Thanks,
Bill

I disabled my oil injection system on my 98 merc 90hp by unbolting the Oil Injection Pump and removing the driveshaft and then reinstalling the pump assy and then disconnecting the warning buzzer wire from the tank. Simple job if you are mechanically minded . Just make sure the gasket between the OI pump and the engine block is intact so you don't create an vacuum leak and accidently lean out the fuel air mix. If you aren't confident of your mechanical abilities having it done for 250 isn't outright highway robbery but a fair price IMO

I take and remove the oil pump completly. I machine a block off plate. Some will have the oil injection screwed directly in the fuel pump. On those, I take the fuel pump apart and remove the check valve, tap and plug the hole, and then rebuild the fuel pump with a non-injected fuel pump kit (no holes on the outter diaphram) while I am there. Lastly, I remove the warning module. If a 95 model it will have one. Some models had warning modules and some were wired directly to the alarm circuit. IF it makes a beep when turning the key on, it will have module as that is a system check for the buzzer.

I will NOT install oil injection back on any Mercury engine I build. I have seen too many engine failures from oil injection failure. Just my .02

I have been in contact with James and he will be doing the work for a lot less than $250.00

Bill wrechin does great work for a lot of guys on here, nothing but great reviews on his work!!! Great choice.

I watched James work his magic yesterday and now I won't have to worry about the oil pump going south when the motor is running. Note to self, always squeeze the fuel bulb before starting the motor, it will run better that way. :)

I did the same thing on my 92 Black Max after I realized it wasn't using the oil it should've been... Its running great now, and its a pretty easy fix... 20 minutes will have you... 250 is a bit steep in my opinion, but if you don't mind making sure its right, guess its worth it, better than buying a new engine. Good luck with it..
