Wouldn't that be nice! I know some of you guys are retired military and I thank You
Some have retired, only to start another job, another field of work, or just pursue their dreams of being a fishing guide and make a comfortable living :) ,,no pun.
BUT, when 60% of the public sector is on the government dole, then you have a problem. Retirement checks, benefits, etc. to be paid for by the government, sooner or later the Ponzie/pyramid will crumble. But that is what happened in Greece and thanks to the unions, they get full bennies at 55 years old.No bennies, riots in the streets.Greece is broke!..Greece just borrowed Billions from me & you & Europe. That is what is happening to Social Security, the government has spent it on other programs, and the Ponzie has fallen, unless they riase taxes on the working class, and some who are in a job that pays thier own type of SS are exempt. Most of the trillions Obama has used, of the $$ we don't have, to create jobs, has gone to create government jobs. Bad Moon A Rising
My fix is: lets all join a union and get government jobs and retire early so we can fish & hunt more. That does not take into account for the Sports Ticket you can buy through your dish provider or cable network and watch all the sports you can endure.
Ping pong anyone?

A union is nothing more than a copout for a dead beat. Whether it be Greece or Tennessee.

Please refrain from stereotyping people in unions. All are not deadbeats, as all people who are non-union are not either. I'm in a union, not always have been, but I am now. I Sir, do not consider myself and many, many, of my peers to be deadbeats. Many are deadbeats, just like in the places I worked that were not union. Lucky, I'll give you that, but not a deadbeat. I'll hold my own with most I reckon' in about any working situation - union or not. Unfortunately there is good and bad in both - that's why stereotyping is unnecessary. Everyone has an opinion just as mine and yours and that and a $1.50 will buy you a Coke. This is the last I will say about this as I don't want to offend anyone that may be reading and I figure this has the potential to get ugly. Everyone have a nice day......Jim emoBigsmile

Y'all cast all the stones you want at Government employees. I bust my butt as a government employee and earn every penny I make. My grandpa was also a hard working, 7 day a week Mechanic in the UAW, and he's far from a Copout Cheez.

Well you can read what you want to into my post if you wish. Nowhere in the short post did I say nor did I even elude to the statement that ALL union members were dead beats. I will translate my post for you so you can get your emotions off of your sleeve. A union is a copout for a deadbeat. Dead beats will use the union to keep from working or even keep their sorry selfs from getting a much needed and well deserved boot. If you and your many, many peers are not dead beats then I was not talking about you at all.
Since we are discussing opinions here I will inject one more of my strongly held ones. Unions have outlived their usefullness in America today. There are laws on the books to protect workers from unfair labor practices. If anyone does not like their wages and or benefits or whatever then they should quit and go somewhere else to work instead of having someone else take up for them.

I got emotional and angry when I thought it was a comment slighting all union workers. I see you didn't intend it to be that way. I apologize for getting worked up. I just love my gpa more than anything and lost a lot of time with him since he worked 7 days a week for the first 20 years of my life. Sorry for jumping the gun Cheez

i agree pretty crappy thing to say... not sure where it came from but defiantly uneeded

There are some Government employees that are deadbeats, but there are a lot of good hard working individuals , too. I worked for the Federal Government most of my life and I will tell you that most are hard working and good G-man. Don't let some rotten apples ruin it for others. Yes, I believe that the private sector should employed more individuals then the Government and have a better pay check then what they are getting to begin with. Some Unions are good and some are not as good, but they are needed in most cases to keep the system fair and honest for some companies out there.

Speaking as a teacher, the district and state would run all over its teachers if the union wasn't there to hold them in check. Believe me, there would be a lot more shady behavior from principals if there wasn't the threat of getting the union involved for unfair practices.

I'm glad you clarified your comments Cheez, and you are perfectly correct. It is much the same with tenured teachers. Tenured teachers are protected fairly well, and for good reason, but, some of them take major advantage of this and do not work hard. A dead beat teacher might use the tenure thing as an excuse not to work. This is unusual in elementary, I'm just using it as an analogy for the union worker that might use the union as a cop out.

Brandon, your work is appreciated. I honestly don't know exactly what you do, but I tell my students I have an Alabama fishing buddy that is actually a "rocket scientist." You can actually become a rocket scientist if you want.

It appears that as usual there are some that could use some lessons in reading comprehension. You read something and you immidiately jump to conclusions and get defensive. I clarified my original post but it appears that some still want to be judgemental. That is fine too. You are entitled to your opinion just the same as I am.
As far as where my "crappy thing to say" came from goes, it came from 32 years of working with and in unions. Witnessing first hand how SOME workers use the unions to keep from working. SOME use the unions to cover for them when they lay out of work drunk. SOME use the union to keep from lending a hand to their fellow worker because it is not part of their job classification. SOME unions have put companies out of business with their greed. SOME unions went on strike during the Jimmy Carter years when unemployment was in double digits.
I could go on for hours speaking of the negative effect unions have in today's economy. I think my point has been made so again I will say that unions have outlived their usefullness.
If anyone would care to debate about this without feminine emotions and name calling, bring it.

The last job I was on as a Boilermaker was at Loudon, TN back in the mid eighties. I had lots of great friends on that job and many still are. Quite possibly the hardest working individuals I have ever known.
