I took the kids out near the River Park tonight so Nikie and her sister could kayak from there to Coolidge park (about 2 hours). As they launched we prepared to do a little fishing while we waited for them to call us to come pick them up. My daughter caught 4 pumpkinseed, 1 bluegill, and 1 tiny bass with the cast net. I fished a white/chartreuse curlytail grub and a Luhr Jenson deep diving crankbait and caught nothing. I gave the grub to a teen who was fishing with old line tied to a stick he had fabricated...figured he needed it more than me.
I saw a couple of boats and asked if they caught anything. They just gave me that same old generic "yep - we caught a couple" without looking me in the eye... A family that could not speak English had a few more than a couple though and left out of there just as we were arriving with a nice basket full of about 20 or so bluegill, a couple of small striper, and a tiny catfish. I asked them what they had caught and they said they didn't know so I walked up and told them.
When my son got tired of fishing he let me use his ultralight with a blue/white crappie jig on it. Right before sunset I caught 3 crappie and 2 small stripers. All fish safely released.
