I know everyone sees the camping areas along the river. Are these public? I have been wanting to take the kiddos camping but wasn't sure.

Thanks,

Only ones I know of Skeeter are on the Suck Creek side (probably what you saw) No idea how to get there and you'd have to put the boat in and run down to the site and have someone drive the truck.
The one I'm thinkin of is above the pump storage station and a couple above Mullin's cove Maybe they would show up on the Google satellite shots.

There are several small islands on the river that are useable. I used to know a guy who put a lawnmower on his boat every year and camped on a little island below Sullivans.

There are several strips of land along the shore that are virtually inaccessible from land, no roads, steep banks etc. Look for a little cut where a creek runs in there are usually some good camping areas there and you may find signs of an old whiskey still..

Look on a map where Prentiss Cooper WMA comes to the river. That's public land

Don't forget your catfish jugs. The kids will remember that forever.

The little campsites that dot the Suck Creek side of the river are easy to get to, by vehicle. It's River Canyon Rd on the Hamilton County Side and the same road changes its name to Mullins Cove Rd on the Marion County end. I have no idea who owns the land that people camp on but the rock climbers come from all over the country and seem to camp anywhere they want. The locals seem to get the lake lots, I mean spots. Just in case you don't know, the entire length of the road is now paved but just a little rough. Passenger cars travel it, all day long.

Come out of HBSP then bare slightly left and head straight to McClellan's Island... the side facing HBSP you will see an opening that enters a slough, Inside that little area there is an awesome little beach for the kiddos to swim. On that point between the slough and the bay you will see clearings for campsites. You will not have people walking into your camp. That is my semi-secrete spot, Keep it clean...

Pull up Google Earth ... You can see it well and even see the natural beach I mentioned..
