I took Dhaun fishing down on the river last night. We had a pretty good time and caught some pretty nice fish. Dhaun caught a nice blind squirrel 3 lb smallmoth on a spoon. That was it though for the spoon and I preceded to take him to school with the jig after that:) After I caught a nice 3.5 lb LM and a 3.5lb SM within 5 minutes of each other I was able to get him to try the jig for a while. He actually caught a few on it with one being a fat 2 lb spot. I got another SM also on the jig that would go all of 4 or a little more. It was a pretty good time and the fish cooperated pretty nicely. All fish caught in 10-20 feet of water mainly on vertical structure with a couple on points. Hopefully Dhaun will post some pictures. He had a trophy 3 inch spot but he threw it back before i could get a picture

My gosh if you took someone to school, the planets must be lined up just right! Did you buy a lottery ticket last night?

Dhaun, sounds like everything must have gone right for you guys last night. That means you missed out on one of the classic "fits" that Beetlespin pitches. You really missed out. that is usually one of the highlights of the day and one reason i keep going with him! you should go again with him until you get to see it. you wiil laugh until you cry.

Fishheadspin, It was a great night to be on the water and yes the fish were cooperative. Beetlespin joked a lot and remained calm for the most part, however, I could immediately tell he was well accustomed to competitive angling and did not like to miss a fish...No fits, but a few occasional words to himself to remind him to stay focussed...he also spoke highly of you more than once.

Fisheadspin, I think that's DHaun's diplomatic way of saying that when he speaks of you, he raises his voice!!

he is not raising his voice, Lance just talks loud due to his hearing loss from his wife screaming at him all the time!

Back when I fished tournaments I drew out with a guy that threw fits when he missed a fish or worse yet, when he lost a good fish at the boat. He would scream and hollar and break his rods and jump up and down like a toddler. It was one of the funniest things I ever saw. emoHoppingmad

I dont get quite that bad. I dont do anything that breaks equipment I have to pay for. I threw one fit two years ago when I broke off 30 jigs because of a sorry spool of Vanish flourocarbon and I have never heard the end of it. If I threw a fit everytime I missed a fish I would have had a massive heart attack by the time I was 16!

Thanks, we may be down on the river tonight and I thought I might try for some smallies. I really don't fish the river much and smallies I only luck into every once in a great while. They look like fun however. Maybe I'll catch some. I'll be with one of our CFF guys, FishnFool. We may just fish up by the dam but we'll just have to see what's happening.

A bait that I don't hear too much about anymore that is deadly on smallies is the Gary Yamamoto twin tail spider grub. I have had great success on the deep clear lakes in MO. I usually like the pumpkinsed color with the tails dyed chartruse. Smoke has also worked well for me.
I have not fished these baits around here at all so maybe some of the other guys can shed some light on the subject.

Dhaun, I LOVE THE SHIRT!!! Almost brings a tear to my eye man... I will never see them again in his memory.

Thanks BPrice - If I can't catch all the fish then I'm still proud to be making a statement with my shirt! Listening to Pilgrims as I type this. emoThumbsup

Beetlespin that's why they call it Vanish. The lures and the fish just disappear when you use that junk. I might pitch a fit if I ever used that stuff too.

Beetlespin and I both make our own jigs so we really do nto take that much time to try to retrieve them. If we hang them up it is easier to break it and tie on a new one. we can make them for about 30 cents up to a $1. depending on the hook and skirt.

I was with him the day he lose all those using vanish. Everytime he set the hook it broke. I have used it several times and seems like it is always that way.

we actually have lost more jigs in one tournament a few years ago at watts bar. We were fishign such nasty stuff, i think we lost 40 jigs that day. There were several times that you would get one cast and lose a jig. it was frustrating but the fish were in that stuff so instead of ruining the spot we would pop it off and tie on a new one.
