I was pricing rod holders and realized after I get 5 of them and bases it was going to get kind of exspencive..Me being the fabricator that I am figured I could come up with something just as functional and stronger,,,So after thinking about it for a couple of days this is what I came up with...emoScratch emoScratch
The mounts are just about flush with the deck so you dont trip over them, The holders are plastic dipped to keep from scratching your rods up..The mounting screw has a lock nut on it that you can face the holder in any position you need.. some of the part I had but the whole thing cost about 20$ and some time, thats what one rod holder would have cost at the store,,, Also I can add extra bases where ever I might need a holder... What you think... emoBigsmile emoBigsmile emoBigsmile

Terrific job there PJ! The only thing I would add/change for my taste is somthing on the front/top section to keep a rod from falling out in any way. It is unlikely that a fish would knock it loose, but a bumbling fisherman like myself, if I hit the rod-butt, could easily knock them out of the top, and then have the rod slide into the deep-blue. Just my .02.

Hey Cheez,,
As bad of a Crappie fisherman as I am you buy the supplies and we can work the rest on fishing lessons...emoScratch Biggest heartache is drilling the 7/8" hole in the boat where you recess the mount.. 5/8 nut

Hey Erik ,
I figured out how to use the spell check on google search bar,,, emoThanks emoApplause emoBigsmile

Might have to pass on the 7/8 holr PJ. I am going to be extra selective on the holes I put in the new rig. I will take you fishing though. When I get a chance that is.

Thanks BB,
They should definently hold up,, Erik is right as long as the fish is pulling straight they work great but if they pull to the side the end is not high enough,, next set will be taller...

Cheez, if you can come up with a different idea for the mout or maybe a smalley mounting bolt,, The first one I bilt was out of 3/8 steel bar and 1/2 bolt , Now that ive used them the would be plenty strong..

you could have the nut above the mount so you just have the 3 small holes. I have seen it done like that in the past.

After doing some trolling for crappie a couple of weeks ago figured I needed some more rod holders in the back.

So I looked at some of the spider rigs and came up with this set up so I dont have to drill more holes in the boat and can use the rod holders that i aready have.. This will give me six out at once, also a good reason to go buy more rods..emoDance

Nice job PJ, emoThumbsup I like all of those, probably could get by with 1/4" strap with that width, looks to be about 2" in the picture. Only suggestion that I have is to add some way to hold the rod straight up while taking the fish off so that you don't have to lay the rod in the floor and get tangled up or stepped on, emoAngry What do you think emoQuestion .....Hal - an ole fabricator too!

I hear ya on the rods on the floor hal! I cant get it through my kids heads to stop LAYING a rod on the floor of teh boat. I see broken rods in my near future!
