I'm trying to improve my roll cast. I peel off about 12-14 inches of line, make a quick tight circle with my wrist, and release the thumbbar when the lure is nearing the end of the arc. I like the way it places the lure under boat docks and overhanging trees and the soft entry in water. The casting arc is not as long so you have less chance of hanging a treble in your partner.I use a 6' med rod and a BPS finesse reel and usually 5/16 to 3/8 oz lures. The shorter rod with pistol grip has improved my accuracy and is easier on my wrist.

What do you prefer for this type cast and in what situations?

I like to use a 5' pistol grip rod for that also. Most of the time I use it with my spinning reels also, just a neat way of flinging the smaller baits in under trees or over hanging cover. </p>

I have always been a fan of the shorter rods for that type of fishing. I never use a rod longer than 6' for any closeup fishing where there are obstacles. I like to sidearm and roll cast better than flipping and pitching. I know I am old school and in the minority but it still works. Most guys I think however like the longer rods and flipping/pitching.

Don't do it!!!!!I broke a custom rod @ our Guntersville tournament when I hit it with a buzzbait trying to roll cast under a low bridge from the back of the boat. That was the first time I'd fished from the back in a looooong time and I wasn't even thinking about it when it happened.Sounded like a gun going off it was so loud!
