My RPM gauge works half the time. I was thinking about changing it out. Is there anything special that you need to do or it just a snap out snap in type of thing? The boat is no longer made. Its a 96' Astro 18fs. Need some help on the particulars in replacing.

Also my engine is a Merc 150EFI , with the lack of better words, there is a port on the bottom of the engine for the speedometer pickup. I hit a log several years ago and it clogged up the port; therefore, no more speedometer readings. How do you fix this?

Just find another RPM gauge that will fit your hole and replace the old one. Disconnect wiring from old and connect to the new.

For the speedometer pickup-use a drill bit slightly smaller than the hole. Use your fingers, not a drill, to work into the hole to remove the wood. Sometimes backward air pressure is needed if you can’t completely clear it with the drill bit.

I used a hook point last week to clean out a small piece of wood in my speedometer pick up. You may need to straighten the hook slightly, an extra wide gap worked for me. We did not hit anything substantial, I guess it was a small branch or something floating.

Yeah it is about half way down the front of the lower unit. It looks like a little cut and you just take a small hook or drill bit and by hand clean it out.

sometimes with an irradic rpm guage it can be in the wiring, such as a loose ground.Maybe something to check first. good luck
