rsimms, Chickamauga, Catfish (plus "Stupid Guide Tricks"), 6-19-2008, Tim Meyers & Tom Powers

A very fun day full of catfish, and "Stupid Guide Tricks." More on that in a moment.

Tim Meyers and his father-in-law, Tom Powers, came fishing earlier this Spring but we got stormed off the water after an hour or two. I promised them a make-up day and this was it. They had a ball. Tim said, "I caught more fish today than I've caught in the last five years. And these were bigger than the fish I caught on a deep-sea charter two weeks ago." It wasn't fast and furious, in fact the morning started slow. But we hung in there, made a couple of wise moves and slowly but surely pounded out enough fish to fill their cooler, and probably threw back that many or more. No real monsters today, but we did find four or five quality fish. The best bite really didn't start until after Noon.

Now for "Stupid Guide Tricks."

Ever since I've been a fishing guide, people often ask me, "What's the funniest thing that's ever happened to you on a guide trip?"

I'm usually at a bit of a loss because I can honestly say there has never really been a particularly outrageously funny moment... until today. Anytime I'm catfishing with youngsters, I tell them, "Now hold onto that fishing rod tight because big cats can yank it right out of your hand." But it's never happened... until today.

The sad part is, it happened to ME, not a little kid. emoBang

There we were... fishing along, not a care in the world and having fun. I am really not sure what happened. Maybe I was switching the rod from one hand to another? Maybe my hands were slimy from unhooking catfish and baiting hooks? Or maybe I'm just an idiot? emoDoh

Whatever the reason, I remember feeling a fish hit, raising the rod slightly to get pressure on him... and the next thing I knew I was watching my VERY expensive All Pro Rod hit the water and start sinking, or being pulled, out of sight.

You often hear the phrase "cat-like reflexes." Well, I'm not bragging (much), but with cat-like reflexes... or an instinctive act of desperation... I hit the water head first in what I'm sure was a 9.8 Olympic dive. I went deep, waving my arms to and fro and finally felt my arm wrap around the rod. I grabbed hold tight, guesstimating I was ten feet down... at least it felt like it, and started trying to claw my way to the surface with my one free hand.

The catfish had other ideas. Have you ever been in an underwater tug-of-war with a 15 lb. catfish? emoFish

Don't try it. If he'd been a 30-pounder I would never have regained the surface, or sacrificed a $300 rod & reel combo. I did, however, win the tug-of-war, struggled back toward the boat doing a one-handed dog paddle. Tom was kindly standing by with an outstretched hand. Tom however, didn't reach for me. He said "Give me the rod!" emoThanks

Of course I did and he proceeded to fight the fish while I made my way to the back of the boat and with Tim's help, climbed back in. Then I laughed until I cried as Tom landed our biggest fish of the day. Now is that service with a smile or what? emoSunshine

No picture of the fish that took me swimming however because in the process of saving my fishing rod, I fear the digital camera that I wear on my hip, will be a casualty of the catfish war. Fortunately the card is fine (see below)... and the rod & reel I saved were far more expensive than the camera.

Plus my clients got a wonderful show... and a great story I'm sure they'll enjoy telling for the rest of their lives.

Proud to be of service gentlemen. emoBigsmile

Life is good and getting better everyday... and hang onto that rod tight! emoGeezer

That is another fine fishing excursion for the clients Richard, you must have acted pretty fast for your age, if it had been Spurhunter he would have bobbed like a styrafoam floater. Write the story up in the paper, be sure to include pictures, we love pictures.

I've done that and it ONLY happens when you have a camera or a phone in your pocket. Glad you are alright and saved the equipment. I feel the same way! However when I dove in, the water was 46 degrees and it go real unfunny in a hurry..... Good to see y'all caught some nice fish today. Take the phone apart, everything, battery apart from phone and set it all out on the counter. Let it stand for FIVE DAYS!!!! NO shorter time.... then when you KNOW it is dry, plug it in for a couple of days and don't touch it. I've done this with three phones that went swimming with me and they still work.... though one has a muffled speaker.

I would like to PERSONALLY welcome you to the "Overboard Club". emoRedface emoRedface I would be honored if they would put up your picture on the "Wall of Shame" next to mine, or even between my pics (I am a multiple recipient of that award). Congrats on a GREAT save!!!! Now you know why my cell phone lives in a zip-loc bag on my hip, and the camera in a sealed plastic food container in my storage compartment.

Thanks for a great laugh and for not usurping my record for the largest fish landed during an "in the water" fight (mine was 30 pounds, and I was ALONE except for the spectators). Your certificate of merit is in the mail.

Sure wished we had that on video. It would make for a great advertisment for your service. "Guide goes through great leaps to allow client to reel one in!" Would have loved to see that one. emoWorthy Jmax

That is priceless Richard. As Jmax said, Where's the video camera when it's really needed ? I'm glad you saved the rod and reel and that you and your clients had a memorable day.

"Stupid Guide Tricks."

Sounds like a new book title! Great story.

That is awesome, Richard! Shows how much a man loves his stuff. I feel bad now about my snide post on the croc shoe age spots. For what it's worth, I have heard you can recover cell phones by heating then in the oven for 4-5 hours at 130 degrees. Dunno about cameras.. don't really know about cell phones either.
