1. Sitting at your desk, go through these steps until ready to plug into the engine;
2. First, using a floppy that you don’t care about, format a “MS-DOS startup disk.” To find this and the instructions to do it, type in “DOS booting” in the Help and Support search window of your XP menu, found behind your “Start” button, lower lefthand corner of your screen. After finding the help topics, click on the one “Create MS-DOS startup disk.” The instructions will come up;
3. Basically, the instructions are as follows, go into “My Computer,” right click on the floppy drive you’re using, click on “Format” and then go to the bottom and click “Create an MS-DOS startup disk”;
4. When the disk is formatted, remove the disk;
5. Plug in the serial capable provided with the software;
6. You now need to assure that you have a serial communication port, open. Go into your Control Panel, click the first icon, “Accessibility Options,” go to the “General” tab, far right, go to the middle menu titled “Serial Key Devices,” click the box “Use Serial Keys,” then click the “Settings” button to the right, go in and make sure the “COM1” or whatever one you have available is clicked as a “Serial Port:,” you’ll have to enter this into the FFI program to make the communication link with your EMM;
7. Now, shutdown your machine. While off, install the MS-DOS startup disk, turn the machine back on;
8. After booting, you should be left with a blank screen with a DOS prompt, like “A:/,” now you’re ready to hook up to the EMM;
9. At this point, your machine is on with a dos prompt, remove the DOS boot disk, and install your 1.42b diagnostic tool disk into the slot;
10. Regardless of the prompt, you want to type the letter of the drive you’re using the diagnostic tool in, followed by “EMMDIAG,” so if you’re floppy is drive A:, but your prompt came up C:/, type A:EMMDIAG after the prompt and it’ll look like this “C;/A:EMMDIAG.”
11. Go to the engine;
12. Now, follow the instruction on the screens, remove motor cover, plug cable in, turn off main battery switch of you have one (I have a Ranger that has “kid proof” switch in the back, but it doesn’t matter if this is on or off ), turn ignition switch on;
13. Now the FFI menu should come up and march through setup and get you to the troubleshooting screens;
14. When you’re finished, you can restore your machine to XP by simply rebooting.
