I really didn't have a ton of confidence going into the CBA Saturday. They weren't going to pull any water and it was supposed to be cloudy which generally hurts the offshore bite. I have only fished 3 times in the past 6 weeks, all of which were CBA's... Been really busy with work and haven't had a chance to get out.
To sum up the day it was a total grind as we only boated 6 keepers all day. It was a cluster at blast-off... My dad was late and it was Jayme and Adam's turn to do blast-off, but since my dad wasn't at the ramp yet I told them to take my boat number and I would blast everyone off. About halfway through blast off dad makes it to the ramp. We get to our first stop and to my surprise nobody was sitting there.
We fished for about an hour and a half before I finally got a bite. Set the hook and it was a good start with one just over 4. Went about 30 minutes between bites set the hook and knew it was another good one... Got her in the net and she was just shy of 5. About 30 minutes later added a 2.72 and then a few casts later later my worm never made it to the bottom and set the hook and secured our 4th keeper and smallest of the ones in the well at 2.12. About 5 casts later got another bite and this fish was just under 4 to give us about 17 lbs.
We went about an hour without a bite after filling our limit. I was pulling my worm through a brush-pile and got a couple of really hard and eratic bites... I thought it was a small fish until I set the hook. As soon as I set the hook I said please stay hooked because I knew it was a toad. The fish came straight up and cleared the water by at least 3 feet and I thought she was over 10lbs. She ripped a bunch of drag and bull-dogged for a minute and then came straight up again and cleared the water by a couple of feet near the boat. My heart was about to pound out of my chest. She went around the trolling motor a couple of times and then came up right next to the boat and jumped right into the net. On my scales she weighed 9.41, and on the CBA scales she weighed 9.47
At this point I felt like we needed one more fish over 4 and we would have a good shot at winning. Tried as we may we couldn't catch that other fish that I thought was going to be the difference.
So we headed to the scales thinking we were once again going to be right there with just not quite enough, but it ended up being enough and finally getting the monkey off my back and winning a CBA. I was beginning to wonder if it was ever going to happen because before Saturday I had finished in every place other than 1st in the top 10.
Congrats to everyone that did well and cashed a check in this one it was a tough bite for sure.
We ended up with 24.08# and the 9.47# was good enough for big fish as well.
