saltyduck, Gunny and Chick (CBA/Gambler tourneys), Weekend of fishing!, 7.11-7.13, Brad,Jason,Chris

My wife and kids are in Virginia seeing my wife's family which equals Shane fishing a lot!

I decided to take Friday off because it was my birthday. Brad and I had planned to go to Gunny and fish on Friday because a buddy of mine called me and asked me for some places to try the week before and in 3 days had over 30lbs a day and had 3 over 10 (and I saw pictures). We launched at Goose Pond and immediately went to the money spot my buddy had caught them so well. Nothing, nada, zip, zilch... We pecked around a couple of other areas I like and nothing. About 11:30 move to a grassy river flat and finally catch a fish, about a 2lb'er! We notice some fish blowing up in the topped out grass, so we ease up to it and start throwing a frog. Second catch get a blow up and catch a small fish, next cast catch a 4lb'er. Then that spot dies down. We move down river to another that I knew the grass would be topped out and it was game on. I only caught one on a frog there that was about 3.5#. Brad rigs up for flipping and proceeds to put on a clinic. Caught our next 8 fish flipping all off one grass mat, 5 of which were over 3.5# with the biggest close to 5. Ended up with our best 5 right around 20 lbs. At that point we had to roll to get back in time to get everything ready for the CBA the next day. Wish we had figured out the pattern earlier as we only had 3 hours to fish once we figured it out.

Saturday (CBA)

I had the tournament sponsor fishing with me which was Economy Honda. Originally the GM was going to fish with me but he got tied up so I lucked out and a good friend of mine thats the finance manager ended up fishing with me. He isn't much of a fisherman but knew we would have a good time. I told him to brace himself because the bite was going to be slow and it was going to be hot! About 30 minutes after blast off he gets a bite and its a 13" spot. I'm just holding my rod helping him with the spot when a fish about jerks the rod out of my hand. I tell him to drop the spot in the floor and get the net. We net that fish which was 3.5#. Measure the spot and he is good so we have 2 in the well. About 10 minutes later get a very soft bite on a shakey head and set the hook. Fish comes straight up out of 25FOW and clears the air by 3 feet right out from the boat and its a pig! Fish goes back down and is ripping drag, finally get her turned and coming back up and in the net! On my scale she weighed 6.62#. Get her in the well had to work with her and get some flip clips on her because she was on her side at 1st. The flip clips did the trick and she was fine the rest of the day. Went about 2 hours without a bite and then Jason sets the hook and says I'm hung, oh wait no I'm not its a fish! I get the net and we get her in the boat, she was out 2nd biggest fish 4.32#. We went another two hours until our next bite when a fish about jerked the rod out of my hand and she was 3.5# for our limit. It was about lunchtime at this point and felt pretty good about it because we around 19# with 3.5 hours left to fish and just needed one more quality bite to get rid of the 13" spot. Try as we may we couldn't get rid of her which was frustrating. We didn't catch another keeper the entire day. We had a couple of shorts that would have weighed more than the spot, LOL!
We ended up with 19.13# and good for 8th and $250, and we had the 3rd biggest big fish as the second big fish beat us by .05... A good day on the water and wish I could have gotten points for that tournament but oh well, I guess thats part of the job when you are the CBA president.

Sunday (Gambler Tournament)

1st off... If anyone wants any Gambler worms, Giggi Heads etc... Message me. Free to a good home!!! I have about $75 worth of assorted Gambler soft plastics. Maybe I just have my fish trained to eat certain things because mine don't eat Gambler plastics. It was a total grind all day for us. We caught 4 fish and 3 would keep so we did have a limit but it was only good for 9 lbs. Chris did break a good fish off on a brushpile that would have helped us but overall it was a very slow hot day.

When I got home yesterday afternoon I was a complete zombie after getting up at 345 the past three days, but after 13 hours of sleep last night I'm ready to do it all over again!

Nice report! We took a major beat down in the CBA and only had 8 something. We have struggled all season it seems. Guess we will try the night tourney!
Congrats on being in the money!
