We went to the beach last week for our annual family beach vacation. I decided my boys were old enough and their love for fishing is apparent, so I wanted to take them on a guided inshore trip for a bit of a different experience. We fished with Captain TJ Cheek, and he was an awesome guide and also very good with my kids. We were targeting Specs and reds, mainly specs this time of the year, and were fishing with live shrimp under a popping cork. It was awesome because there were times the fish were so aggressive the kids wouldn't even have to set the hook, just start reeling when their cork disappeared... They had an absolute blast, and caught probably 50 fish during the 4 hour trip with a mixed bag that included, Speckled Trout, Redfish, Mangrove Snapper, LadyFish, and Jack Crevalle. The highlight was my 3 year old about had the rod jerked out of his hand by about a 4lb ladyfish and it was jumping while he was fighting it, and he got it up to the boat and it launched itself right into the boat and hit my son right in the chest, he freaked out it was priceless. The fishing was pretty slow that day considering we only had 5 keeper specs, but the boys had an absolute blast, and had enough Trout for dinner that night! When we were driving home on Saturday I asked them both what their favorite part about the week was and they both immediately said the fishing trip!
I love nothing more than seeing the excitement on my boys face when they catch a fish or their overall passion for catching fish, it makes me a proud! And lord willing their will be many exciting fishing adventures ahead for the three of us.
Attached are a couple of pics from the trip, my older son wouldn't hold any of the fish because they were dead, but here's a couple of pictures of my 3 year old holding the biggest spec we caught, which he landed.
