Only had a few hours to fish Sat. morning, so I went to Nickajack to fish the weedbeds. I got on the water at daybreak and there was a light fog, water temps in the low 80's. Ran downstream and fished weedbeds on the upstream points of the islands I could find and did very well. The weeds are tall and thick enough to be floatinting in mats in 8-10 ft of water and there were lots of good bass stacked up on the edges. I threw a large chartruese buzzbait with a 5" chartruese trailer. The bite was consistent till the fog burned off about 9:00 am. I had 10 fish that were keepers, most in the 2.5lb class with the best one going 3.5lbs. Wish I'd been in a tourny! As soon as the sun got to the water the topwater action shut off, so I backed out away from shore into 15-18ft of water and switched to a big spinnerbait, casting it in to shallower water and slow rolling it back over the deep. Picked up three more fish doing this and ended my morning when a three or so foot long, 10-12lb gar rocketed out of the water with my spinnerbait in his jaws. I was lucky that I hooked him with the wire thru his jaws and I managed to land him after a another couple of good leaps. Best day I've had in a while, love that topwater bite! JC1
