Polo-Dog asked me to take a snapshot of the sauger jig with the treble hook complete with the crappie bait installed. I pulled out a yellow one and a dark green and put a ruler next to them so you could get a feel for their size. A buddy of mine I go to church poured these and tied them. Together we have been using homemade jigs for the last 10 - 12 years. If you aren't getting these things hung on the bottom you don't have them in the right place. Again, we tried the crappie tubes in place of a minnow last year, and we did not experience a loss in bite frequency nor quality. My hands are a bunch happier --- not having to dip into the minnow bucket and replacing a minnow all the time. Most of the time we use a yellow and white crappie tube bait regardless of the hair jig color. We have used many colors of hair jigs --- orange, red, white, chartruese, yellow, green, blue and the predominate colors we have. hope this helps

That's exactly what I needed to know. Digital photography is so much easier to understand than is a verbal description. Thank you so much for sharing with us. Wow, what a big jig head. Does it have to be so big because of the current and the depth?

we use the big head because of the current flow --- best bite is when we have 30,000 to 45,000 cfs (45,000 is pretty much max water flow through the turbines. We also are able to maintain a vertical presentation with this weight of jig. As for bites --- it is really varied -- generally the smaller the fish, the more tendency for it to be hooked on the small treble. But that doesn' always hold true. I think sometimes, the fish hit the big hair jig and get into the small treble. I do know that success rate increases with the treble. I like to increase my odds --- it takes so much to happen to catch these fish. Right season, flowing water, not too much wind, thawed out ramp, and have to be off work to be able to go.

I poured up about 50 of the 1 oz. football head jigs a couple of weeks a go but I haven't gotten around to tying the bucktail on yet, I have yellow, red, and pink. The foot ball jigs will always keep the hook pointed up, keeps from getting hung up too bad. Like you say, ya gotta keep the bait on the bottom. I am going to try tieing on some stinger hooks and add the crappie jig to the stinger, sounds like it will work.

For my stinger hook I use a barrel swivel, (2) snap rings, crappie jig and a trevel hook: I put a snap ring on either side of the barrel swivel, attach the trevel to one end of the barrel swivel via the snap ring, slide the other end of the barrel swivel with the snap ring up into the crappie jig. Then I thread the now made stinger onto my hook of my football head jig. Sticking the point through the crappie jig through the snap ring and out the other side. Perfect length not to long and you can hook that tuffie in the tail with the stinger. Super strong and your not trying to tie a 6" piece of mono.

And you can add a little different color to your jigs as we all know sauger bite different colors on different days and sometimes colors change several times during the day.

Here's my stinger sorry for the crude drawings hope this helps in the explanation. The gitzit or crappie jig holds the stinger on the hook with the barb of the football jig head holding it to the main hook of the jig. See photo's. Works really well. I learned this from an Ole-timer
