Years ago setting in an ichthyology class we were discussing prehistoric fish. The Professor was talking about the sturgeon then he showed us a picture of the bowfin.
He stated that the bowfin was found west of the Mississippi River. After looking at the picture I thought to myself sure looks like a scaly catfish to me. I mentioned it to him and he looked at me like I was nuts. Growing up in Sweden cove I had caught a bunch of these bowfin looking fish in the creek when I was a boy but knew them as scaly catfish.
Not long after me and a friend were fishing around the mouth of Battle Creek and my friend caught one so I took it home and froze it. I took the fish and showed it to my Professor and after some dissecting it did indeed turn out to be a bowfin. Got some browny points and actually passed the course.
