Some additives that were great for fuel a few years ago may not be beneficial now that we have to use ethanol in our area. Some may even be harmful. There is some good info on additives for marine engines at this site :
I'm not pushing Seafoam, Sta-Bil, STP or any other additive nor am I trying to discredit them. I just want to make sure that what I add in my tank is going to reduce or eliminate any harm that ethanol may cause to my motor, especially 2 strokes. Read the info then go to the manufacturers website and read the MSDS sheets for the products. Contents are not printed on the label for many of these additives. If you see IPA, isopropyl alcohol, in the contents it's strongly recommended that you not add that to fuel containing ethanol. Note page 2 of the MSDS under "Reactivity". Some manufacturers do not recommend their products use in fuel containing an oxydizer. Ethanol is added as an oxydizer agent.
This topic comes up often on the forum. Spend a few minutes to check the info and use the product that's best for your year, make, and design. If you don't already have a filter/water separator, put one on.
SeaFoam guarantees their product NOT to harm any internal combustion engine. I use it in my welder, chain saws, weed eater, pressure washer and 4 stroke boat engine. Before I started using SeaFoam in my 22 year old Stihl weedeater I had to run the choke halfway closed. One tank of gas treated with SeaFoam and no more half choking. I will use it in all my engines from now on.
