I have an SEI and I have had to use the warranty with no problems at all. I dont regret the purchase. Some points. Follow break instructions, do plenty of forward and reverse swift changes meaning at idle and firm during break in. Let it run in reverse a little. The warranty is voided under any competition format. Such as dog fights, tournaments. If it fails and you say hey it failed during a dog fight, they will say sorry read the terms. Dont get me wrong they were great with my replacement. Mine had vibration, severe and I know where that was headed so it hadnt really failed yet and it was 60.00 to get me a new one in less than 10 days. You will have to mount drive shaft, water pump assembly.

If you have an Evinrude do not use one. They do not work well on them or seem to last. Both Chattanooga marine and Chattanooga fishnFun have stopped putting them on the Evinrude engines. For some reason they just do not last on an Evinrude. They do have a warrenty but how many times do you want to have to worry about it, how many times do you want to have to change it out, how many times do you want to be without your boat while you wait for it to be sent back and repaired or replaced just to do it all over again. The SEI people also have an out to their warrenty. If you read it very closely they say their units are not warrentied for competition. That includes ANY!!!! bass tournaments. So if you fish a tournament they could refuse to warrenty the unit if something went wrong. I did not know that before I bought one but they told me that after I had purchased it. They knew I was fishing them but told me they would do it even thou they were not having to. Too many times and they could say, NO! In their warrenty it expressly says it is not warrentied for "Racing" then it goes on to say "Competition". It is a little misleading since you think they are talking about "Racing Competition", not tournaments....but I was told by them personally that fishing tournaments fell under the "Not covered" becuase it was "Competition".

There are some of our guys that have put them on other brands which have not had any problems. If you are talking about a brand other then a Evinrude you should be O.K. from what I have seen and heard. They are a lot cheaper in price then a brand name one, usually about half price. I dealt with SEI for a couple years and this past fall put on a Evinrude Lower unit on my Evinrude motor and it appears to be great.(knock on wood) emoAngel Jmax

Also see user gearcaseman on Bassboatcentral forum. He is the case GURU and has what is needed for a new rebuild. More expensive but OEM.

Same deal here. Have seen several SEI Johnson/Evinrude units fail other than my own. I bought another new one when mine went out. This way I have a spare for not "if" but "when" mine goes out again.

there are junk i went thru 5 in less than a year then had in blow the insides out that cracked my mid section which there do not warranty check on the mid section price they are highhighhigh. they do a good job getin them back within 2 weeks but dont plan on fishin much also hurd they was goin out of business??? not sure probly rumor... i have a good merc lower unit for sale like brand new all new seals pumps grease $1000

You get what you pay for. If you pay $500 for a lower unit that's what you will get if you pay $4500 for a lower unit you get a good oem unit

If you want to try one and not spend a ton of money I have my other one that I did not put back on. I did send it back, it was rebuilt/fixed and is now in working order. I would be willing to part with it for $500.00. It also has the drive shaft. Like I said, I would not put it on an Evinrude but any other motor they seem not to have the same issues. emoAngel Jmax
