After reading the thread about the guy trying to buy the boat and the seller not taking a check, it got me thinking. I don't know if y'all have covered this on here but... here goes.

I am currently trying to sell my 60/40 OB jet on Craiglist and have been texted and emailed by people wanting to buy my "item". They say that they can only text and can only use paypal or check. Also, that they can't come look at the item and they will arrange for shipping/pickup after the purchuse. It's a 250lbs motor, not exactly going to throw it in the trunk or backseat. They never use any language which I would expect when buying an outboard, don't question condition, pressure test, problems... It's pretty much common sense but just wanted to pass it along. I can see why some people won't take a check. Be careful when doing business with strangers, theives are coming up with new ways of taking hard earned money out of your pockets

After these experiences, I am only taking cash unless it is someone who I know or have some knowledge of where they live/work/etc... I have done business with some great stand up people but there are always those who can't/shouldnt be trusted.

FWIW... Thanks.

Brett

Buying or selling, you HAVE to be alert to possible scams. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Check what you are buying, and be careful of payment if you are selling. Too easy to get hurt these days.

When it comes to a lot of money and a check. No one should be in such a hurry that you can not meet at his bank and watch the check clear across the counter before handing over the item.

This is common scam scenario. Do not respond and do not antagonize them. They are very smart and can cause you more trouble if they are motivated enough. Deal only with individuals you can speak with and meet personally in a public place and not at your home.

When listing on Craigslist I always put in the text "will not respond to email or text". If you get either it is a scam.
