I've gotta run an errand to Dunlap this weekend, so I'm thinking I'll get my brother to ride with me and we'll take the canoe.

Is the river big enough for canoeing/fishing as far north as Dunlap? If so, does anybody know any good places to put in and take out? What kind of fish should we look for. Any specific tips on lures, etc. or cover types to watch for would be greatly appreciated.

I have never fished it. People tell me there are some decent fish in there.

At this time of year I doubt you could fish it all the way to Dunlap - it can get a little low in volume in that area until Oct/Nov I think. Someone correct me if that is not correct.

I bet fly fishing it is fun about now.

Put in's ?... 1 mile below Nickajack dam is the mouth, At the Jasper Bridge over the Seq. Ketner's Mill and nearby bridges.

Sorry, that's not much help but is all I know. A good map of the area may be your best bet if no other responses are given.

............. leave us a few fish in there ! emoSmile

I've fished the river many times but always wading. My experience is you can use a canoe as far up river as Dunlap, even this time of year. You may have to portage a little but not too much. i usually use rooster tails, rebel crawdads, and small senko worms. My best luck is upriver from Dunlap as the cattle farmers are doing some real damage to the river farther down. And, the water begins to pool up and get pretty warm this time of year on the lower end. You should catch plenty of rockies, some spots, and a few largies and smallies mixed in. Let us know how you do.

I live by the river and have fished it all my life they are some good fishing zoom speedcraw is a good bait. they are also some very large smallmouth in the river

You can definitely find them in there from the mouth below the dam up about 1mi.... never gone further than that, as it does get shallow, but we caught fish all the way up to about the Jasper bridge. Lots of wood and blowdowns. It was earlier in the spring, but I wanted to come back in the summer and pop topwater all the way along. Let us know how you do. And if you really want help, call over to R&R's, they know it well and can probably tell you others that you could call that may know of some places to drop in a canoe. Or call up to Castles in Whitwell. By all means post a report.....

You can fish it with a boat from the mouth where it empties into the tn. river, go upstream to the old mill dam, this is as far as you can take a boat with a motor. As NA says, there are many blowdowns, deep pools, rock blufs, in this stretch of river, most places it is around 6 foot deep, maybe more in places. There are many places to put a canoe in from dunlap to the mouth, you can put a canoe in at most of the bridges that cross it. We used to put in at Ketner's mill and float the river with a canoe, you have to get out and wade some but you can have a ball cooling off in the water, capsizing the other canoers, getting out on the sand bars to swim or horseplay. You need to find a spot at one of the farms to take the canoes out, leave a truck there and take another truck up river as far as you would like and float down. Very little current in the summer but a fine place to kill a day. Wear cut off jeans and an old pair of sneakers and have a grand time fishing or playing.
