Mr. and Ms. Muskrat had a good afternoon of fishing at the "nuke" plant Friday afternoon. We caught close to 20 channel cats with three tipping the scales at around 10 pounds or so - one 11 ...and one hefty 15 pounder. We lost a couple of nice ones on a flimsy rod and some weak line so I'm leaving it at home next time - lol. I tried a new recipe I found on the internet. I had been using wieners with garlic powder and garlic salt but this time I added...red jello. I guess the sweet / salty combo did the trick as the cats just ate it up ( no pun intended ). I just put the wieners in a tupperware bowl and let it sit overnight on the counter - be sure not to put it in the 'fridge...he-he. We had a variety of bait, but every cat we caught except for one was on the red jello wieners. I'm hooked on it now and it might be a good bait for you "nuke-nuts" to try sometime. Good luck.

RE: Sequoyah Cats 7-8-2006 - red jello recipe

Just thought I would mention on the jello recipe I used one pack of red jello per pack of wieners. I added enough water so that all of the cut wieners were covered to let them soak it in overnight. I left the liquid jello in the bowl while I fished the next day just so they would remain good and juicy. I'm not sure if it matters though.

Thnaks for the idea man. I'm gonna use it this week and I'll let you know how it works!

That is great Muskrat. I must say however that I have caught very few channel catfish over the past few years but catch almost exclusively blue cats on the main lake and flatheads in the holes in the creek. How deep were you fishing for the channel cats and were they in a hole, on a flat, on a drop, or some other structure?

We do kinda the same thing for cats in the farm ponds we used to fish. We would take a tub of chicken livers, sweeten the blood up with either jello (1 pack of jello per chicken liver container) or a simple syrup (1 cup water/1 cup of sugar, boiled down) and would add hotdogs. Not only did it catch a good number of cats, but on some of the bigger bodies of water, it did a good trick on the carp, which are great fighters.

... Polo-Dog. You're probably right about most of those fish being blue cats. As far as how we caught them we just drifted along the main channel going from the first green buoy you come to at the nuke towers to the last one right past the towers in about 35 - 55 feet of water. Some of the bigger cats were a little past the water discharge area on the other side of the power lines toward the bluff area in very deep water.
