Sheriff and Son, Dayton Bass Club Champions Two Years Running
With temperatures in the 30’s and wind speeds of up to 15 MPH, twenty-eight boats launched at the Dayton Boat Dock for the Dayton Bass Club Classic in search of a limit of 5 fish. Sheriff Mike Neal and son Michael battled the cold and wind to bring an impressive 32.87 pounds to the scale and win the Club Classic for the second year in a row. After the two-day tournament, the father and son team had more than a 6 pound lead over second-place team Bill Shipley and Mike Wallace with 26.68, and a close third place Vic Welch with 26.43.
Sheriff Neal said that he was just the net man as his son Michael does the catching. Michael has had an impressive season. He came in second in the American Bass Anglers Weekend Series on Watts Bar Aug 29-30, and qualified for the Championship in that series. He also qualified for the Regional in BFL (Bass Fishing League) to be held in Arkansas. Most recently, he and his uncle Rogne won a 19 foot Skeeter bass boat in the B.I.T.E. Classic Sept 5th – 6th.
The big fish of the tournament was 5.58 lb. bass caught by Steve Harrison and Lewis Kinsler. Bass were caught in shallow water on lipless crank baits and spinner baits. Coves protected by the wind were the most productive. Prize money was paid to 8 places.
