I figure someone out in CFF land knows the answer to this. On my last trip, my 3 month old Shimano Compre 6'3" spinning rod broke about 4" down from the end while I was swinging a bass into the boat. It was only about a 1 1/2 pound fish and I didn't reel it all the way to the last guide. I was just swinging it into the boat like always and snap the end of the rod broke. I usually don't spend over $40 or so on a rod, but I thought I'd try a little better rod and now it's broke after only 3 months or so.emoScratch I got the rod at Bass Pro Shop in Sevierville (not by mail) and I understand it has a lifetime warranty, but these days just what does "lifetime" and "warranty" mean. The BPS web site is a little confusing in that it says rods other than BPS brand have to be returned to the manufacturer, but the Shimano web site says to return the rod to the retailer. Anyone have any experience returning a "lifetime" warranty Shimano rod?

Thanks in Advance for the Help!

Choo Choo, Don't really know how the warrenty works but in most cases I have heard of BPS is fairly reasonable about taking things back. Hope it works out for you.

ChooChoo if you have the receipt there will be no questions asked. If not you may have to explain what happened but BPS is real good about returns. If you have the rewards card they will have a record of when you bought it and there again you'll have no problem. Basically it works like this. With proof of purchase you can get a refund, without proof it is exchange. I have taken rods and other things back and they didn't even ask how it happened.
Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, I do have the receipt so this will just give me an excuse to pay a visit to BPS. I knew a CFF member would have experience with this. Again thanks for the quick reply.

If the store won't do it I bet Shimano will. I had 6 TLD 30's (saltwater reels) and the gold plates on the drag lever tarnished after about a season and Shimano replaced them free. Another time I had two real expensive big Marlin reels and the drags were failing after about 6 years and I sent them to Shimano and they repaired them with new improved drags and did not charge me. They get my vote of approval (and my business).

Me too...except mine snapped as I bent to lip the fish with one hand while holding the rod up high with the other. Sportsman's exchanged it for a new one.</p>

Usually your best bet on any warranty claim, is to take it back to the store that you purchased it from.

Swinging fish into the boat is hard on the rods, if you have accidently banged your rod and damaged it, it will show up when under stress (either highsticking or swinging fish into the boat).

Besides being hard on the rod, it is much easier to net the fish, and keeps the fish from banging and bouncing all over floor of the boat, which is important if you want to release the fish.
