Side Scan Sonar Education

I am trying to educate myself on the side scan sonars. I know the best way to get the real scoop is to talk to those that have and use these units. I would like to get some feedback from those users. I want to know the good but also the bad. As expensive as these units are, I would also like to hear comments about value, are the lower priced units good enough or is it better to pay more for the higher priced units. Any information would be appreciated.

I also have a specific question that maybe someone can answer. In looking at some of the screen shots that's been posted, I was wondering, along the centerline of the screen, what is that a view of? Is it straight down beside the boat or what. The reason I ask is because every screen shot I've looked at, along the center line looks like a channel or something. Forgive my ignorance, but that what it looks like.
