went out this morning, didnt hear much till the fog started to lighten up.I had 5-6 different birds gobblin hard for about an hour.I worked one out of a Bottom/creek/thicket, and up a ridge. The bird hung up about half way up approx. 60 yrds and took a shot. The bird flopped and flew about 150 yrds and never saw the first sign.......emoLaugh emoScratch

Keep at it man! Sometimes you just gotta shoot that far, and hope for the best.

Shooting at 60 yards is not smart - all your doing is either educating a bird at best and at worst wounding one that will fly off and die - don't do it....

Yea I did Because I hunt ethically unlike ALOT of hunters.I had been busted 2 times before by the same bird that someone else had already mentally destroyed.I did take a 60 yrd shot the other day and missed...Sunday evening I shot from 60 yrds and that ol bird didnt even flopemoLaugh emoParty

Pattern your gun at 60 yards and then tell me how ethical a shot that is. You may kill one occasionally at that range but to shoot that far away is unethical. If you can consisently put 10 or more shot of your pattern at 60 yards you have the all time tighest patterning shotgun ever built.

Not true you need to do some more research sir. I know of guns and loads that will kill turkeys at 90+ yds with #5 shot. I do not condone those ranges but they are possible. I am going to attach a 30" pattern of #5 shot from a improved cyl gun at 60 yards. See if you can find a spot with a 10" circle you do not have 10 pellets in. And before anyone grips this load has more than enough energy to break turkey bones at these ranges.

emoParty Thanks mallard I knew somebody out there knows what the hell they are talkin about....If you tell yourself you cant make the shot you probobly wont there 39399....emoCool

Look at the head and neck of the goose and tell me how many pellets are in it and check your energy levels on #5 shot at 60 yards and you'll see that it has nowhere near the energy to penetrate a turkeys feathers and do any damage. A full size goose is not the same as the head and neck of a turkey. Do what you gotta do man shoot 60 if you need to but in my opinion ( everyone has one ) its a bad shot.

I have no fear of a 60 yd shot, and have taken many birds between 60 and 70 yards. The key is to speed lots of time, ammunition, and chokes until you find the right combination.

I have 835 Ulti-mag Mossberg. The best combination I have found is the factory turkey choke and Winchester Supreme Extended Range #5 shot. I have tried and went through at least a dozen aftermarket chokes and always come back to factory choke. The aftermarket chokes would either pattern them to tight or would cross the pattern causing it to scatter. I lot of people say you can't get a pattern to tight but I disagree. If a pattern is to tight you stand a better chance at missing a bird at 20 yrds and in. Think about it, a turkey's head is usually a moving target. I have miss 3 birds before and luckily to this day have not wounded one that a know of. Each of those birds was within 35 yds. Twice because I mowed down some trees.

Missed a Pa longbeard this morning at 11 steps... they landed 50 yrds behind me and closed in on "bob" rather quickly. I completely turned around, with two birds coming toward me through a field, so that I could get a shot (which is a miracle in itself). After getting myself twisted nicely into a bavarian pretzel, I had the 1187 up but had to deal with leaves from a sapling laying all over my sight rail......... arms got tired, started to shake and birds were TOO CLOSE, he cleared the fence post and BOOOMMM. hundreds of #5 high velocity copper plated pellets yup you guessed it, STRIKE 1...... also missed the follow up shot. I was completely disgusted because I thought it was the "big one" we had chased for 3 years... my dad came over and said that it wasn't him.
Turns out dad was right... the "one" started to gobble again and he rounded up the bachelor group and walked just out of range (65 yrds) through some thick stuff. These 3 birds are the biggest turkeys I have ever seen in the woods and I've bagged two with 10+ beards and 20+lbs. I have a project due tomorrow for my ed. class but thursday we are setting up an ambush. Bringing my brother and his 10ga for extra insurance in case the birds decide 60yrds is out of range. We want to get rid of the big boy or at least one of them in hopes of getting some other birds to loosen up.
