Last Wed the 27th was a slugfest for me. If I were in an MLF Tour event, I'd have had about 70# plus! Started out in Dallas Bay about 9:30. It was cloudy and already a moderate South wind. Fish feeding in the shallows in record high waters. Picked up a Spro jerkbait and had 2 legals on 2nd and 4th casts. Threw 1/4 oz lipless trap and nailed one over 5# then 2 more strong keepers with another big fish pulling off. So it was a 14/15# limit real fast. The wind died, sun came out and the water went slick as well as the bite. With the lake still swelling, back waters were semi-clear. 1/2 way out of the park it turned muddy as was the case everywhere. I tried some warm back waters until about 2:30 and caught nothing and figured the day was over. Water was slick. There was bait up on the flats. I did have one strike but that was all. The wind started to pick up and I nailed a 3 plus on a small downwind point with a spinnerbait. Heading in I decided to try a south facing creek with the wind blowing in. Sun was out strong and the barometer was moving up and the water was 59-61.Saw bait up shallow in the dirty water. Picked up a few 2-3's with a 1/2 oz trap then found a flooded ditch that was just stacked! Put my Talon down and caught 5-3's on the next 5 casts! When they quit, picked up the 1/4 oz. and spanked 5 more! They just kept re-loading! Stayed for another hour or so and picked up about 10 more. Lost count at 20 fish but figured I had about 25 or more for the day. Only 2 short fish all day with most 3# and larger. Had a giant pull off and like usual, had a 30# plus channel cat snagged by the tail which really tested my gear! Now, I should have gone out Thu in the rain while the water was high but waited till Fri at 1PM after it cleared. Fished All the spots again and had only 1 little strike, no fish! Go figure. Everything disappeared. I ran up river to a big slough that has been good for 1 keeper lately. Got on the spot about 4 pm. Talon down and caught 3 on 4 casts for about 11#'s that included one over 5 on the 1/2oz trap. That made the day worth going out. It's certainly that time of year for the pre spawn feed. All fish were very healthy and very thick with swollen belly's! Anxious to get back out during the next warming trend.
