Chickamauga 10/16 A near perfect storm of conditions for day one with the moving front, wind, water conditions, lake level and fast moving Barometer. Cold choppy run up river at WOT but the 21 VS Comanche loves that rough stuff. Started out on my key pattern but zippo. Quickly found 2 keepers in flooded willow grass for about 5 lbs establishing the days pattern quickly. Moved to another location and found the big un. It was just a short 10' pitch of the spinnerbait over a small piece of wood. I let it pendulum down about 5 feet to the bottom and after 3 cranks of the reel- bow up and that familiar "Zeeeet" sound of a giant stripping out 17lb InvizX, I first thought I'd hooked a big Cat. She boiled only once then made a deep dig for freedom. After lobbing her over the net I gave praise to that awesome Omni knot that I use exclusively. So, Wow, I'm now electrified with having 3 fish in the boat over 12 lbs. and what ended up my 2nd biggest Largemouth ever!. closeby I found a small windblown flat point on a ditch bend and saw some bait flipping in that rough stuff. I said "Oh Boy, watch out". I went Talon down, make a long cast out and wake the bait over the willow grass and- Bam. #4, a 2lbr. Next cast in a 4 1/2lbr. Now I figure I have 5 right at 18lbs. I was very close with an official weigh of 17.97. Baro was predicted to crest out at around 10:30 and sure enough, after that I only had 2 shorties the rest of the day. Caught everything in 5 FOW or less.
Nickajack- I was still nervous as hell going into the day with an 8 lb lead because I usually struggle on the Nick and honestly having Billy and Steven nipping at your heels on that lake is not a comforting feeling, lol. Starting out as boat 2, I made a smooth 55-60 mph run up to the Williams Island area. Skipping around, by 1 PM I had 1 lost keeper and only 1 13" spot in the tank. So who did I run in to but Billy and Steven who had 5 fish. I got nervous as all get out knowing I was probly gonna loose this championship. Starting to spin out and not knowing what to do, I went to the spot where I lost the only keeper largemouth and about 15 - 20 pitches in, Bam! a 5lbr! I then quickly caught a 3lb Smallie that went 1/2" short. Ending up with 5.88 for the day and the Championship win of about 23.85. That one lucky bite saved my bacon, lol
Until September rolled around I'd had a pretty crappy year except for a 4th and 5th in the DC series. Then a DC win in Sept then a 3rd 2 weeks ago with CFF then. Bam, my 1st ever championship win!
All in All, Conditions and logistics laid out perfectly for the win. Had the commitee not flip flopped the lake dates scheduled, It probably wouldn't have happened for me as post frontal conditions on Sunday would have shut down the Chick bite. At least for my kind of shallow patterns.
Great job and support from the committee and anglers. Thank you All!
