There is no size limit on spots. However, they are included in the 5 bass per day per angler creel limit.

The dead giveaway is the tongue patch. A small, rough, usually dark patch on the tongue. If the tongue is smooth and the fish is less than 15" long, THROW IT BACK, QUICK. IT'S A LARGEMOUTH!!!

Let's look at a couple pictures from the Weiss Tx.

The first picture is left to right: LM, spot, spot, spot
The second picture is LM on left spot on right.

Notice how the spots are a little more streamlined than the Largemouth. The spots also have dark splotches across their backs. And the upper lip of a Largemouth extends behind the eye, where a spot's lip comes back even with the eye.

You can tell by the jaw as well. With the mouth closed the LM jaw will extend to the back of the eye. A spot and Smallmouth's jaw stops at the front of the eye. Look at the pic above of the bass comparison and you can see the difference in the jaws.

Go by the tooth patch. it a sure thing that way.

L caught one the other day and I was not sure if it was a spot. It was a young fish 11-12 inches long and it had a dark green spot on its tongue. When I grew up on the farm we had six ponds 1 acre to 3 acre apiece. Those ponds were loaded with bass. My Grand daddy wanted us to keep any thing under 12 inches So we did. As I recall those small fish always tasted much better than those five pounders. He wanted us to put the big ones back. ...Well now I know what a spot is. Thanks for tthe info.
