Any of yall catching skipjacks at watts bar lately in the afternoons? My dad is going to be coming through there tomorrow afternoon and I think he was going to try for a little while. Any tips would be appreciated, I told him I thought it was a little late in the year but maybe some of you all know something I don't.

Thanks!

O.K. ....I'm going to show my stupidness.......

What is a skipjack.....I've seen everyone talking about them on C.F.F. but I have never heard of them before I joined this site. I've fished on chick and nick-a-jack for the passed 30 years or more and I don't know what a skipjack is.

Skipjacks are the shad that you see busting the top of the water chasing small shad minnows below the dams around here. Most everyone uses them frozen and cut into chunks as catfish bait. They are worthless for anything else that I know of.

I think that they are also called river herring.

I caught some in January down on wheeler. However, you basically have to work for hours just to catch a few. We were just so desperate for fresh bait it was worth jigging for them in deeper water.

Skipjacks have been a little hard to come by this year . I hope there are still a few to be had up at watts bar. When I get back from Wisconsin next week I hope to get on a few to put up for the winter. If not I guess I will get em when they come back in around March below the Chick. Some people have told me that they caught them all winter up at watts bar below the dam last year. I hope I can get a few.
