I was just wondering what the earliest you guys thought the skipjacks would be working? I'd like to have some for bait here before the catfish tourney but I don't know if they will have started by then.

Unless we have an early/warm spring I woud say April before things get kicking for the skips. Your best bet might be to go to Sequoyah Nuclear Plant and try to get some in the warm water discharge before then.

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure Sequoyah is set up the same as Brown's Ferry; it might not have a warm water discharge.emoScratch

Seq. has it out in the center of the channel. It is usually 4-6 degrees warmer than above the nuke. I have caught skipjacks there in feb last year but it was really hit or miss. Good luck on 'em.

how did you catch them? Just on little jigs like below the dam or were you using jigging spoons or what?

The days I got some I used small leadheads. Black head, hot pink rubber body and a green marabou feather tail. They were in the jumps early one morning when I first noticed them. The retrieve was kinda like a short yank, crank up the slack, then a short yank. They were hitting on or near the surface. Keep in mind it was definitly a hit or miss on the action.

As a backup plan you could get threadfins, all you want at Wolftever bridge. There is a cloud of gulls there all day feasting on them. PM me if you would like a bucket full of them.

There are a few skipjacks around Sequoyah now, but it will take a lot of effort for few fish. I'd suggest getting the threadfins.
